Like he said its just for web surfing. By the way the S.M.A.R.T feature in all harddrives keep a log of how many hours they were powered on (spinning). My 1gb laptop drive has been spinning for 39,462 hours. Thats 4.5 years of spinning (yes I always had the laptop powered on when home) and its still perfect.

Activesmart is a nice program you can use to check the hours.

I still have a Compaq Elite 450. It has a 200meg (Meg not gig) HD, 16meg ram, modem, 486 DX 50 mhz cpu and I have it running win95 and a really scaled down version of MS office. Works like a champ and the screen is still very bright. Sound? ahahaha, no way! CDROM? Ahahah! Hellno! but sometimes just for laughs I plug it in and go on the net and wait and wait and wait and BAM! Still gets me online. Battery weighed more the the laptop. I think we paid something like 5000 when first bought.

Maybe you could use one of them for a mini-arcade for DOS games? That'd be nice. :)

Linux can run on 16mb ram easy so i hear, I got an old compaq desktop, 486 DX4 100 with i think 48 MB ram in it and a 420MB hard disk. I dont know alot about laptop's as old as yours but if it will take the standard desktop 72 pin simm's i got a pair of 8mb's and a pair of 16mb's :p

I doubt a Fedora Core 1, for example, would run a GUI install well on a 486 with 16mb ram. 486 would run a minimal non-GUI install ok for serving a small web site.

That beats my "junker laptop", Toshiba T1900, only B&W/greyscale, no color, 640x480, upgraded 300MB HD to a, I think, 1.2.. no, wait, .. upgraded an 80MB to a ~300MB. 4MB RAM built-in, 4MB RAM expansion card. I missed out on a 16MB expansion card, if I had been able to obtain that, I could have loaded Win98se with 20MB of RAM. Right now, have Win95 gold + patches. It's a 486sx-20, so it's a bit painful to use. Have IE 3.02 on there, image-loading disabled. Funfunfun. :p
What the heck, it cost me all of $20.

Hey where can I get a free laptop? Just about any old beastie with a serial port (preferable to USB) would be great for use with automobile OBD (on-board diagnostics) software.
