I have a shot at a 4850x2 2gb for 120$ delivered to my door and sell my current great overclocking 5750 for 110$.
I could take the money from the 5750 and trifire the 4850x2 with a 4850 1gb?

Or just spend the money and grab a 5770 to crossfire with my overclocked 5750 to get 5870 performance.

Do I keep my hardware current or step back to the 48xx series and trifire?

How does tri-fired 4850's scale? Last I check it was not so good.
What about driver support?

So in short buy the 4850x2 2gb and a 4850 1gb for about 120$ net, after the sale of my 5750.
OR
Just spend about 140$ on a 5770 and crossfire it with my overclocked 5750?

Thanks

i would try getting another 4850x2 and get a quadfire setup, and avoid the cost of having to get a 3x pcie 16x mainboard

I would sell your current 5750 for $110 (if you can) and pick up 2 5770s for $130x2. Overclock them and you will surpass 5870's performance. 4850x2 is a loud card from what I heard. You aren't going to lose much on performance.

Thanks guys,
The 4850 x2 + 4850 doesn't seem like a good idea.

If only that 5830 was under 200$ :(

But 5770 matches or even surpasses 4870 in performance in Metro 2033 and BF:BC2. So it will probably be at least as fast as tri-fire 4850s without the heat and noise and power consumption; plus DX11.

XFire 5770. Performance is still improving on the 5000 series, newest features/Dx11, less power and heat, Not likely to see any work in the area of TriFire drivers for the 4000 series in the future for new games, can always TriFire the 5770 in the future.

I'd also say go with the 5770. Going with the 4850's is a dead-end route, and the trifire setup is just gonna give you a tremendous idle power consumption and opens up a whole new world of technical problems for you to scratch your head and kick your computer over.

crysis sucks for scaling.. probably because twimtbp

Crysis 1920x1080 2xAA Everything on High
Single 4850 - min 15.81 Max 30.7 Avg 24.73
4850x2 - min 21.04 Max 49.58 Avg 35.67
4850x2 + 4850 - min 28.68 Max 67.48 Avg 46.17

Thats no too bad? And this was 6 months ago. I'm sure it has improved a bit.

there are only a couple games i have played where scaling is not good or non-existent, unfortunately the only one that comes to mind this minute is Sims 3.

as far as new games go
Mass Effect 2 - 1920 x1080 everything 100% - 70-80 fps avg
Bio Shock 2 - ^^^ Same as above
Metro 2033 - 1920 x 1080 everything on Very High, no MSAA, 4x AF - 45-65 FPS AVG
-
next day or 2 i will update that thread - actually running the bench's for single to triple
will add
Alien Vs Predator
Stalker CoP
BFBC
Metro
ME2
Bio2
LoL (just for fun)
and new patches etc. on battleforge

I just played Metro2033 today with dx11 and tessellation enabled on a 5770 card and am now going to get a second card. The tessellation made that much of a difference. It is like night and day without it.
