I've been trying to decide between ATI's 4850 and 4870. I was originally going to get the 4870, but I'm not sure if I need to spend that much money. The 4870 is $75-100 more than the 4850 but is it worth the extra cost for me?

My specs are:

Intel E6300 1.8ghz cpu
Corsair HX520 watt psu
Corsair XMS2 3gb ram
Asus P5B Deluxe

So basically I'm not sure if it's worth spending the extra money on the 4870 if the 4850 can run most of the newest games on high settings. If the 4850 will be able to handle most of the games coming out in the next couple years then I might just stick with that.

Depends on your resolution. If youre going to do 16x10 then just stick with the HD4850. If youre running 19x12 then get the HD4850. In a couple years they will both probably be outdated so Id just get what suits you best now

But is his 1.8 GHz E6300 going to have enough oomph to push a 4870? At lower resolutions he's going to definitely be CPU bound. I'm not sure if even higher resolutions are going to be enough to make it worth him getting a 4870 (unless he also has plans to upgrade his CPU in the next year).

Here is what you do. Purchase the HD4850 and take the $100 dollars you saved along with selling your E6300 and buy yourself an E8400 and OC it to 3.2-3.6 on stock vcore and now you got a serious gaming machine.
