My current system runs crysis at high with quite alot of lag.
for eg, in intense parts at about 10-20fps and empty 20-40 fps.
what should i do

an q6600/e7200

or 4850

I would definitely invest in the cpu upgrade first. Then while you are saving up for the gpu(if you have to save, that is) a lot of non-reference version HD4000s will hit the market with better cooling and overclocking ability.

play a different game.

But if you must, or for other games, i would upgrade the CPU on your rig first.

You aren't going to play Crysis well, even at 16X10 with a 3870. (and that 22fps average was with a QX9770, and Crysis benefits from CPU)

However, the others are right, your cpu is in much worse than your GPU. I'd get a E8400 or E8500 as Quad core is seldom used to any significant advantage now.

There are some games that are heavily CPU dependent, MS Flight Simulator X doubles your framerates with a quad core, I've also noticed improvements in World in Conflict, Gears of War, Caesar 4, Neverwinter Nights 2 and some other games.

Neverwinter Nights 2 only uses one core. At least that was happening in the beginning, maybe a patch fixed this!?

I did notice improvements after I upgraded from E6700 to qx6700 cpu.

Yeah...but... for the most part dual vs quad has been a non issue, especially at 16X10 and up.

what does dual vs. quad have to do with the dynamics between CPU and GPU balancing (ie your comment about high resolution)? If a quad can show definite improvement over dual its going to matter significantly regardless of resolution (ie FSX or Supcom at their most demanding will absolutely chug along with slideshow frame rates on a 4GHz dualcore even @ 1024x768)

although, I guess if the game is unplayable we'd might as well make it super high resolution...
