Hey all, I just wanted the opinion of some people on whether I should just pick up a 4850 or 4870. I will be running a resolution of 1680x1050. Will there be much of a difference in fps at that res?

Right now I play LOTRO and COD4. I have a E6600 clocked at 3.4, 8800gts 640, 2gigs pc-800, 700watt OCZ GameXstrem psu, and a Gigabyte 965p-DS3 mobo

Unless your monitor is 19x12 the 4850 is fine. It's great at up to 16x12 for almost everything.

4850 isnt worth the upgrade from 8800GTS 640. I'd consider 4870. But it's not like 8800GTS is slow anyway. I'd upgrade if you can recoup some of the cost by selling the 8800GTS :)

If you can cool the 4850 and overclock it the gap narrows to 5-10%. At your resolution the memory speeds won't matter as much. Basically, if you spend the extra $100 you'll be able to use more AA in future games when the 4850 can't. I don't think it's worth it.

4870. It always costs less money to go bigger now than it will be 6 months down the road when you find out you arent happy.

There are some maps in COD4 that push my system with all settings on "extra" and AA/AF on, particularly Creek 15v15 with lots of smoke out. Just do the 4870!

Why don't you wait, your 8800 is fine for the games you play now, but if the money is burning a hole in your pocket, go 4870
