256-bit, less pipes

ATI is about to release a new old card called Radeon HD 4830. It is based on the well known RV770 chip and this card will have a 256-bit memory interface.

The key difference from Radeon 4850 will be the pipeline numbers as ATI plans to cut the pipelines count. We don't know how many branches will be cut but it will end up will less pipes than Radeon 4850 and 4870.

ATI still hasn't made up its mind on the price of such a card and it will be positioned below Radeon HD 4850 and above HD 4670. It is meant to fight Geforce 9800GT based cards, which are priced slightly above ?100.

Sounds like another solid addition to their mid-range cards. Can't wait to see the pricing on these. :)

So this should be faster than the 4670 cards? If so then this might make a good HTPC card with that extra gaming performance.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. been eying the 4670 very strongly recently. If 4830 performs better, costs only slight more and has the same basic power envelope, will end up being a tough decision.

Yeah, the power thing will decide it for me. If the gaming is only slightly faster yet it requires an external power hookup and larger fan then it might not be worth it. My HTPC is far from silent but If I can avoid adding hot, noisy things to it then I will.

IF this is true, I would expect a 4830 to sit at the $100 price bracket. Odds are what we'll see is the 4670 and 4650 drop about $10 in price to $70 and $60 respectively (to combat undercutting pricing on the 9600GSO), and the 4830 would sit right at $100-$110 to directly fight the 9600GT, 8800GT and be price competitive with the 9800GT.

My question is how much of the 4850 market will it cannibalize?

And given this rumor of renaming the 3xxx series inline with the 4xxx series, I find one or the other very unlikely to happen.

Ati now know sthat it can take ove rthe market. if the HD4350 comes out soon, it will probably sit between the 9600gt and 9800gt. And the latter for me, if it has an extra power connector, the 4670 is still going to be a tough fighter.

I wish I could push a button have the market resemble what it will look like in a month's time. There are going to be some rediculous deals going on with all these new cards coming out.

I'm in the same boat with one of the above posters. I am about to pull the trigger on getting a 4670 (currently use a 1650Pro). I may hold off on it for another week or so to find out more details about the 4830. If the 4830 comes out and does not need an external power dongle, than I just may get it over the 4670, however, I am not counting on it.

If it doesn't I'll be mad cause I just bought a HD4670 for my file server so I can fold with... But I'm guessing with 256-bit memory bus it probably will...
