480i output 360

Does the Xbox 360 render the game at 720p and scale it to 480i when playing the 360 with a 480i TV.

Xbox 360 offers choice for both the game developer and the end consumer. The game developer can create their game in any resolution. The consumer can request any output resolution (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i). The Xbox 360?s advanced video scaler will scale the game?s native resolution to the end consumer?s requested resolution with extremely high quality output. Bottom line, the games will look amazing.

In my experience, it renders in 480, and some games are noticeably smoother than in 720p.

if i used the 360 with my comp monitor at 1280 by 1024, how would the 360 look.

It would depend on what you use to hook it up.
I would assume that he would be using VGA or DVI, given that this is a computer monitor. IMHO, it'll look better with VGA, since I don't think you can choose a 4:3 resolution using HDMI.

To some extent, it'll also depend on the game. 360 games are coded with widescreen in mind, and there's no set standard for how they handle a 4:3 or 5:4 screen. Some of them will modify their aspect ratio and use the entire screen; others will maintain it and give you black bars at the top and bottom.
