48 vacant buildings blight Downtown Detroit

I realize that this is probably not on the forefront of most people's minds here on AT, but Detroit seems to be used as whipping boy a lot around here.

I like Detroit. Amazing buildings, cool airport and good music.

Amazing buildings? Detroit has the most pathetic downtown of any U.S. city for its size. What "amazing buildings" are you referring to? If you want to see good architecture and skyscrapers, I recommend Chicago.

Whether this reaffirms your views on the city or maybe spurns some remorse over its seeming demise I thought the interactive map might interest some.

yeah, just saw that this morning...awesome interactive map. Although, since I always drove South to get into Detroit, the map's flipped from how I see it in my mind. 😛

It'll all turn around, it's just taking its sweet time is all. I think the Ford Auditorium is the most unfortunate one - that building never had a chance. I've had a chance to wander through it...what a blown opportunity, especially with it being connected to Cobo.

I love Detroit. If I had the money, I'd buy up whole blocks and rehab the buildings. The architecture there's amazing, and it's a shame to see it fall into ruin.

I had my prom in Ford Auditorium, Lincoln Park HS class of '75.

Go Railsplitters! 😛

Even if you rehab it.. you got the filth and lowlife's keeping people from moving in.

maybe some hollywood movie production will buy the buildings and destroy them for one kickass destructive movie.

Nah, with the right planning you can get people in. Baltimore as some real dumps, but they're also rehabbing parts and getting people in there. It isn't cheap, but it's definitely doable.

I thought by interactive that when you clicked on a building you could see how much hookers and blow were inside now

Funny you should say that. Detroit is now home to Unity Studios. Text

A lot of movies have been shot recently in Detroit using these buildings as backdrops. So far no buildings have been harmed in the making of these movies. We'll see what the future holds.

damn man that sucks. i don't think things will turn around for detroit unless the automakers start flourishing again. anyway, philly ain't that much better off.

man, some of those buildings look really nice. would hate to see them demolished.

Yeah, that was great news. I'm still mad that the film industry finally starts settling into Detroit right after I moved away. DOH! I know a few directors and photographers back there that are having a great time.

I love how someone bashed on Detriot and used Chicago as an example. They are both crime-ridden shitholes that should be "gifted" to Canada. I'll throw in Oakland as a bonus.

I love the history of the buildings.

It's such a damn shame it's a dying city.

yeah, a lot of those buildings are gorgeous, and you'd think that just a little love, a shitload of money & patience would go a long way into turning that downtown around.

poor, poor Detroit.

"Michael Bay Blows the Fuck out of Detroit!"

I'm sure he's already pitched this concept a few times....
