I certainly hope so, otherwise I'd have to say good riddance.. Anyone who does something so rash over a trivial little thing like a game needs more help than the world can provide.

And his mother, what a twit. Wasn't his fault at all, was that "damn game"..

A married man spends a lot of time playing EverQuest and his wife thinks it is an addiction but he does not. That pretty much sums up the piece.

So, my in-laws work out 3-4 hours a day, 7 days a week.....does that mean they're addicted??

I don't think someone who plays EQ 10+ hours a day is addicted.................they just have no life. :D

That being said, i've played EQ for over a year now, my total played time on my main character, a 45 Pally, is less than 7 days.......And I love the game, I could sit and play for a couple hours straight if I had nothing to do. But then things like work, wife, kids, and internet pr0n get in the way.....;)

The really sad thing about this piece in my opinion is that it lumped playing a computer game in with stories about substances that are truly physically addictive like drugs. There is a world of difference between a person that compulsively plays a computer game and a person that ties off their arm a few times a day to shoot up heroin.

Everquest kills babies!

Sure it's addictive just like many other recreational endeavors. But after time the addiction turns into boredom.

Look on the bright side. Unlike gambling you can't lose all your wealth playing a game. :)

Sh!t I played Asherons Call when it first came out for two months soild. My game time totaled up to 1month and 1day, in a time span of 2 months. Then over the course of the next two years it when up to 1month 10 days. Was I addicted? No. Did it control my life no. I just didnt have anything better to do at the time.

I don't think it's pathetic
I didn't get into EQ
But I was an AC Addict
I used to play every free moment I had and dream about the game at night
If I wasn't playing, I was thinking about playing. I had to quit it cold turkey.
Now I am tempted with SW coming out.

I was in the same situation as you (with EQ). I played it every second I had, and dreamed about it at night. When I wasnt playing all I was thinking about was playing and ways to make my character better. I quit cold turkey also, but still think about the game alot. For example when I watched the show tonight it stirred up memories of EQ which then made me go to my guilds website and now I feel like crap because of it. About 3 weeks ago I was tempted to start playing again so I started up another account, luckily, I didnt like the game anymore (I sold my original account, so I had to start fresh) so I cancelled that account and havent touched the game since then. It's really hard. Even though I dont like the game anymore, I still cant stop thinking about it. I guess its because of everything that happened while I did play. Since day 1 I wanted to get into one of the best guilds in all of EQ and I did. I spent so much time working twoards that and threw it all away when I quit. Now I'm going to be tempted to play EQ2 when it comes out, I hope it sucks horribly. It might also be because I havent found something that I enjoyed as much as EQ. I'm going to go sign up for the gym soon, people say that takes your mind off things so hopefully that will help.

I guess there's a reason most people called it EverCrack.

I never played it... And I probably shouldn't start...

OK, everyone is saying how addictive it is, but in what fashion? What does it do for you? Mental reaction, and or phyiscal reaction or what? What is the hook in your soul that forces you to come back.. What are you rewarded with for your time?

I think alot of people get addicted to it because its almost like a drop in replacement to the real world -- without all the problems. Plus its alot more enjoyable than the real world.

Good grief....I've played EQ and while it is fun I can't see getting addicted to the game or any game for that matter. Games are a form of entertainment just like television, reading, sports, etc.... Some people choose one form of entertainment, others choose something else. Just because I am in a softball league that plays every week am I an addict? Just because I work in my garden or on my rose bushes several hours a week does that mean I'm an addict? Hell no, all it means is that I enjoy those activities so I do them as much as I can. People trying to lay blame on a game for "ruining" someone's life need to get a life of their own. As for the kid that offed himself. It wasn't EQ's fault. He had problems and his mother let him get away with a lot of B.S. If she wants to blame someone for his suicide then she needs to blame his weak ass for it and probably lay some blame on the person she sees when she looks in the mirror.

Am I the only one who's played this game for awhile...but just couldn't get into it? It just seemed so complicated, like there was way too much to "learn" and figure out just to get something basic done. I never got very far, and it's one of those things where you can't really get any solid beginner help cause everyone else is trying to figure something super-complex and in-depth out.

Maybe someday I'll give it another go, but for now, my account is poof! gone. Not gonna pay $10 a month for something I just cant get into.

?

I play games every single day and have been for a very long time. Addicted? maybe.

But the one thing I still don't understand - just what the hell is EverQuest?

Is it one of those gay games where you walk around and do nothing?

No.. you walk around and kill things to get experience.
