You're a bunch of fucking retards if you think that evaluates to 2. Poll options changed to reflect this.

At least we have a couple of honest people posting on ATOT (2 votes for "I'm a complete retard" so far).

I'm betting group 2 has a higher education and has seen numerous times that when something was written like that such as in an exponent that the parenthesis were implied.
(Read my professors do that all the time)

Your professors evaluate mathematical expressions incorrectly? Where do you go to school so I can avoid it?

No they are not evaluating it incorrectly they are saving space.. some also use short hand for numbers timed 10 to whatever power.
White boards do not have infinite space..
Suppose you should watch out for for some of the missiles the us uses since the one doing that most designed some of that stuff... :(

Using shorthand is different than neglecting parenthesis that change the value of an expression.

Short hand is just as wrong in math and parenthesis in exponents were often missed due to space reasons.

You want to scans of the notes?
Parenthesis are missed in exponents in my solid state class(biggest offender of that) so much it's kind of funny/sad. However, everyone there knows what it is suppose to be.

I posted this in the other, but just so it isn't missed:

For those of you claiming distributive property, hello?

48/2(9+3)
(48/2)9 + (48/2)3
(24)9 + (24)3
216 + 72
288

Same thing. You can't distribute just the 2 to the 9 and 3, as it isn't really a 2, it is a 48/2. This isn't the same as:

48
---------
2(9+3)

Because then you'd have 48 * (1 /(2(9+3)), which is not what is written. The answer is 288 as written.

EDIT:

It IS the same as:

48
--- (9+3)
2

Im surprised how worked up you are over a math problem snookieguy and the other people as well. Go outside and breathe folks.
