I truly hope that the people in this thread that answer other than 288 are just trolling.

If not, it a very, very sad statement about our inept education system.
 
I actually believe the right answer is that it can be either. There was a guy in another thread who posted 2 screenshots of his calculators and 1 said 288 and the other said 2. The newer model showed 288. However 2 is the real right answer.
 
terms inside brackets (9+3) = 12
exponents and roots = not used
multiplication and division = 48÷2 X 12 = 24 X 12 = 288
addition and subtraction = doesn't exist outside of brackets in this instance

In any physics or engineering classes if a white board or chalk board is used we have all probalby seen them do stuff like the following but how do you interpret it?

A lot of times parenthesis are implied which while not a good thing to do does happen.

It is 288 for you people who dont know you order of operations. This is stuff you should have learned in the womb its that easy.

The (9+3) comes first which is 12 for you slow people.
Then you go left to right. Currently you should have 48/2(12).
48/2 comes first(since it is on the left), which is 24..duh.
Then 24(12) =....wait for it...288
 
Seriously I learned this stuff in 7th grade. It's not hard. People posting 2 are either trolling or are below 7th grade math level.

However, if it were written

48
___________
2(9+3)

then it would be 2.

Of course, in both math class and real world math we would never write an algebra problem as the OP did, specifically because of the problems it causes. Which is why his post is both poignant and fucking annoying.
The inline division symbol is only used in elementary school math to keep from messing up idiot children.
