4790k won't post?

Played around with the rig some more... it just rebooted randomly when I inserted a USB key so I thought there might be a short. Took out the board and it wouldn't POST anymore (same error codes as OP). Now I've got a single stick of my old RAM (4gb) in there, will see if it's more stable.

EDIT: yes, it does appear more stable with my old RAM

And, just looked at the compatibility page, [Vengeance] CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10 is on there but mine is CMY16GX3M2A1600C9. Would it help if I set the RAM to C10 in the BIOS?

What you could do is swap the one stick (in the identical socket, so you know it is the ram stick, rather than which ram slot, that is problematic), with the other (identical) one, and see if there is any relative difference between them.

i.e. If one of the CMY16GX3M2A1600C9 works great (completely stable), and the other is problematic, in exactly the same ram slot, then you could have a bad stick of ram.

Additionally, because it is so quick and easy to try setting the motherboard to C10, you could try this, even if it only had a small chance (or better) of improving things.

EDIT: You could try running memtest86 for a while (e.g. overnight), and see if it detects any problems with the ram.

I currently have the new 2x8GB in DIMM3 and DIMM4, so far it appears stable - at least no random annoying reboots. I've tried dual channel before (1+3 or 2+4) so maybe it's "dual channel" mode that's messing things up?

BTW, on the top left of the above pic is the mounting hole. I found that I had screwed the mobo in so tight that the screw filed down some of the bits around the hole. Do you usually put washers between the screw and the mobo?
