Just set up a new build using MSI Z97 Gaming 7, 4790k and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 1600C9 but it won't POST. I've tried on board graphics and the discrete video card, debug code alternates between

10
15 (according to manual this is "Early NB Initialization")
55 (early memory initialization)

I tried swapping the RAM slots (1+3 to 2+4) but that didn't help. Next step I'll try sticking in my old 8GB sticks, in the meantime any other suggestions?
 
Oh hey! Thanks, left only one stick in the first slot and I can POST now.
I'll try to update the BIOS and report back.

Looks like need to reset CMOS...

Edit: my BIOS is quite outdated, it came with 1.1 and the latest is 1.4 on the site.

Sh*t... not sure if I did a bad flash, it's not booting up

Time to make use of that multi BIOS switch!

Edit: I'm on the backup BIOS... not sure what happened before. I used the M-Flash util in the BIOS. Should I not have done that?

In your link (to the MSI site) it says:

When updating BIOS via M-Flash, please make sure that your USB storage device is recognized as "Removable Device",
If your USB storage device is not recognized as "Removable Device", please update BIOS via MSI Live-update under windows.

So using the M-Flash is not straight forward.

There used to be a flasher put together by MSI forum members. Dunno if it's still there, but it was the ONLY good way to flash their boards.

Shoot... I think that's what it was doing, the screen was completely dark and I thought I heard the computer constantly rebooting (hard drive clicking / cycle noises)

In regards to all LGA 1150 mainboards.

In order to properly flash both the bios and me extension it is recommended to use FPT. (attached)


Just place the program and fp parts on a dos bootable usb stick along with the bios.

Syntax:
fpt -f xxxxx.xxx -savemac

Warning: This version of FPT will brick previous board generations. This is only for use with LGA 1150 Mainboards.

All flashing is done at your own risk!

Edit: I booted up my previous C drive so that I can have Windows to use... let's see if I can get this bad boy to flash.

PS. I can't get by without reformatting and reinstall W8 right? Most here would still recommend a full format/re-install of Windows after changing mobos? (B75 -> Z97)

OK, this is F'd, I tried to install the Killer Network Drivers and the machine just hard froze halfway. RAM incompatibility?

Update: FINALLY got my BIOS updated to 1.4 using MSI Forum HQ USB flashing tool.
Wouldn't MSI have less support issues to tend to if it just removed that M Flash util in the BIOS? Lol. What good is that M-Flash in the BIOS for if it bricks boards.. :whiste:

May reinstall Windows for that 'clean' feeling... and to re-flash the bad BIOS, pop the switch over to the bad BIOS before using using fpt:
This FPT version will flash any lga 1150 board, it is also the only way to recover a bios chip that was muffed up by mflash. (Dual bios boards of course)

Haha, yeah! I was almost gonna go out and buy the cheapest LGA 1150 CPU I could find, in order to flash the BIOS :$
 
Something still seems a bit off... I installed a brand new copy of Windows 8, and used the supplied MSI DVD and the machine hard reset itself in the middle of downloading & installing the Realtek audio drivers. After that, it had trouble booting back into Windows.

Only managed to do a file refresh before heading off to work, but the whole machine just doesn't feel 100% stable yet. No overclock and default BIOS settings (I think)... any RAM related settings I might have overlooked? Might there be issues because I'm running my RAM slower (1333) than its rated speed (1600)?
