4790k or 5775c

I'm considering upgrading my mobo and CPU. there is nothing worthwhile on the uses market here. I would maybe save $100 total buying used 3770k or 4770k. Not worth it. Also 6700k gut a ridiculous price bump. I missed the ship. It's $120 more here than either of the 2 with the 5775c only about $20 more.(Plus can reuse DDR3 RAM).

Anyway I'm considering the 5775c because it does pretty well in gaming benchmark and if you OC it to 4-4.2 Ghz it is on the same or better performance than 4790k even if OCed. eg. pure CPU is almost identical. With the 5775c you also get a bigger iGPU but more importantly it's gen 9 with dx12 support and faster QuickSync. Albeit I'm more interested in the dx12 thing becasue in dx12 games of the future you can actually make use of the iGPU (see Ashes of singularity) and since CPUs last for years nowadays I think that the 5775c might be the better choice?

What do you guys think?

The 5775C at stock can compete with the 4790K. However when it comes to real calculations, the 4790K obviously win.

If you can OC the 5775C to close to identical levels as the 4790K. Then the 5775C is a no brainer.

Forget the IGP part. Its all about that L4 cache.

5775C, just for the novelty. Everyone and their dog has a 4790k

If you plan on using the IGP instead of a discreet graphics card then the Broadwell chip all the way. If you do plan on getting a discreet card however you'd probably be better off going X99+5820K than 4790 or 5775C in the long run.

I would go with the 4790k. The 5775 is nice, but motherboard and bios support is rather finnicky. I know there was a poster on these forums who is quite knowledgeable who ended up selling his because he could not get it to over clock properly. The igp is useless with a discrete card, and who knows if the potential to use it with a dgpu in dx12 will ever be utilized. Considering the sloppy ports we are still getting, I have my doubts.

I have a suspicion that, above ~4GHz, 22nm parts might have better power characteristics than 14nm parts too.

4790k if you're just looking to save money.

5775C if you will not be using a discrete GPU.

5820K if you will be using a discrete GPU and will be overclocking.

6700K if you will be using a discrete GPU and NOT overclocking.

I think you got it all figured out .. If we were in reverse positions you would just have sold me the 5775c route.

Yeah the iGPU dx12 thing is a stretch but with the 4790k you won't be able to use it ever while there is a chance it will help with the 5775c. But there is at least some hope as the Ashes of singularity devs clearly are looking into these dx12 features.

5775C if you will not be using a discrete GPU.

the Iris Pro IGP is like half the performance of a $100 card, if he is not using a discrete GPU he is probably not gaming, so the IGP on the 4790K could also be good enough,


4790K is cheaper, with better bios support and better to OC,
as nice as the 128mb l4 cache is, I think the 4790K makes more sense,

5775c is not Gen9, it's Gen8, not that it makes a huge difference. And yeah the BIOS/UEFI support for the 5775c is spotty. Check very carefully about how well it is supported, especially if you plan to overclock! We've already had one guy here get burned by a Gigabyte board with poor support for the 5775c.

Wow if you can actually get the 5775C then get it, it's virtually impossible here to get one, almost as if Intel has never even released it. Also do some researching on motherboard brand and BIOS support on that processor.

Just for reference I'm using a gigabyte Soc force z97 with a 5775c, no issues and OC works.

Good, at least that board supports it well. Some Asus boards have good support for it as well.
