47 Degrees C is a good temperature, right?

I am using an Abit KR7A-RAID. You think that the case temps are what's pushing it up? I know that case temps and CPU temps are directly linked, and it's usually about 75-80F in my apartment. Maybe I should take my setup outside into the 15F temps and see how it performs. HA!

No, seriously though, do you think that uping the RPM on the CPU fan will make a difference or I am destined for high temps unless I crank down the hot-water heating? :)

When my stuff was in a $50 case from a local comp store, my CPU used to run at 55 idle. BIG difference!

Now that I've got my antex 1040 . my temps have dropped pretty nicely.
My Athlon 900 runs at about 50 under high load and 40 sitting at idle (thanks to cpuIdle).
My case temp reads at 35 according to mbm5 , but a wireless sensor i've put in there tells me that my case is only at 30C or less. Stupid a7v sensors are really terrible i'm told.

Epsilon00,

Well, for the setup, your temps really are fine.... there's not much you can do to directly drop the actual CPU temp versus System temp save upping the CPU Fan RPM (Which you can always try :)). Other than that, maybe adding one more exhaust fan would help?

i've got the athlon xp 1800 & alpha pal 8045 with the enermax adjustable fan. fan set at lower end of scale for minimum noise (~1300 rpm according to cpucool). in an antec 1040 case with one panaflo lo-flow intake, one panaflo exhaust, & the enermax psu w/two fans, my cpu temps were running around 38 idle, 44 load. last night i swapped out the enermax psu for the original antec but replaced the adda fan w/another lo-flow panaflo (despite advertising claims i felt the enermax was kind
of loud). also finally hooked up all the thermal probes for digi-doc 5, including placing one up snug against the athlon die. the result of all this putzing around was a system not noticably more quiet, plus my cpu temps rose by 5C! so here's my questions:

could the thermal probe somehow be hurting my cooling? it's not blocking the hsf contact w/the die.

could the enermax psu be helping keep the cpu cool by having that big exhaust fan right above it?

could it just be that since i was lazy & didn't reapply asII that i just don't have as good a thermal interface between the hsf & die?

could the shim i was using to protect the die (but removed to make room for the thermal probe) have somehow been aiding in cooling?

also, i've been rather dissapointed with the volume of sound generated by my panaflo's. i bought them specifically for the low noise qualities. how quiet can i really expect my rig to be? at current level any ambient noise drowns it out, but if there is no other noise it can be kind of aggravating.

thanks in advance,

joe

I have an XP1800+ on an ECS K7S5A motherboard using the retail hsf and one cheap exhaust fan.

Idle temps - Case 34, CPU 45.

One question, what program do you guys use to test load temps?

I can't use any of the distributed computing programs like seti@home, since I have a bandwidth limit.
Any suggestoins?

when i want to test my computer under loads, i use prime95. to get it, eitehr click here or do a search on google for "prime95". follow the instructions and u'll be able to put ur processor under full load whenever u feel like it, and not really have to use any bandwidth. :)

hope this helps.

I agree 100% Prime95 is probably the best and most gruelling torture test for the CPU. I have never seen my CPU get as hot as it does with Prime.
