450 to 950 mHz - Big Difference?

I'm thinking about replacing my Celeron 350A with a Celeron 633. Assuming I can hit 950, is it worth the $80? Am I going to see a big noticable difference?

I would say you would notice a HUGE difference. I just went from a Cel366@550 to a PIII600@800 and notice a large increase.

yes, HUGE difference is right. THe only time you don't notice an upgrade is if it is above 500 mhz at stock speed and only overclocks to 150 or so higher. You need a huge overclock to notice any difference. If you just think about it, a 100 mhz to 200mhz overclock was a very, very substantial difference because it was a 200% overclock. But 500 to 600 is only a 120% overclock. It's pure math when you think about it. I have a p3 700 and i have it a ghz right now, but i notice basically no difference between ghz and 700. I think i have lost my enthusiasm with overclocking.

and,in a jump from celeron to p3, you notice a HUGE difference because they are two different chips. Jumping to a higher celeron would be noticable but a p3 600 or 700 overclocked to like, let's just say 800, would be more noticable than with a celeron to 950.

I went from a 300a@450 to a 566@877 and the difference was amazing. The Celeron2 chips have SSE and I think this might be a big part of the difference. It is like night and day playing DVDs. Best bang for the buck out there for your system.

i went from a celery 400@498 to a tbird 700@900. DAMN!!!! hella big difference. If you play games!!! DAMN!!!! just playing with the settings it's fun!!!

hehe! im still playing with my system. i got it like 3 weeks ago and playing around with clock speeds almost everyday! =)

I went from an AMD K6-III @ 450 to an AMD Duron @ 927 and the difference is very noticable in just about everything. I disagree that the celeron II upgrade is the best bang for the buck, however, since the Duron outperforms it rather easily. Just my 2 cents, not looking for flames here...

syborg, I agree with most of what you say, but i do believe a 100Mhz to a 200Mhz overclock is a 100% overclock.

Not that much of a difference in Windows, but it done tripled my framerate when I went from 300A@464 -> 700E@933. Syborg: I agree.. I guess it's that the CPU has evolved more quickly than all the other aspects of a computer. If everything was running syncronous with the FSB, like the PCI and AGP, maybe the bandwidth would help things out. Also the DDR stuffz coming out for mobos is going to help. It's definitely a good time to be a computer buff, but also the most expensive.

Fish -- a new mobo would have to be bought with the Duron FC-PGA + slocket is the quickest easiest upgrade for the classic Celery 300A + slot1 crowd. Exactly how many people got the 300A + BH6 combo?

You'll see a big difference, if the rest of your system is up to it.

Be sure that your bios is upgradeable to support the celeron2!

Your chances of hitting 100Mhz FSB are improved if you start out with a lower multiplier chip, like a 566. The rest of the bus speeds can return to standard, a big help with stability. The difference between 850 and 950Mhz is really very small, the rest of the system bottlenecks most apps.

I went from a Mendocino Celery 366/550 to a Coppermine P3 700/933. I noticed a big difference, but some of that is probably due to the faster FSB. I also, however, noticed a difference when I went from my 300A/450 to the dual 366/550, but that one really doesn't count. Going from 450 to 950 should be a big enough difference for you to notice. There are also achitectural differences between the mendocino and coppermine celery chips that enable the L2 cache to run more efficiently. Either do that upgrade, or go for a similar P3 and overclock to a similar level. You will notice.
