45 Gig and 40 Gig maxtors show only as 32 gigs ?

Yup... w2k is limited to 32Gb when creating fat 32 partitions... use NTFS or fdisk the drives using a win98 boot disk if you still want to keep fat32... NTFS is better though....

You can actually get around this. It is true that Win XP and 2K do not allow you to create a partition greater than 32 gig. But if you use FDISK or FreeFDisk I know I can make a 80 gig FAT 32 partition that works in both 2K and XP.

search google for free fdisk

see i went to fdisk and i formatted my drive. it only recognized 32 Gig of it. i was wondering where the rest went!. i heard ppl tellin me to format in NTFS format. i read about it but i dunno how to do it. my both drives look like they got 32 gigs only. how can i make the system recognize the whole 40 gig ? i will also check google. thanks

Maxtor harddrives have a cylinder limiting jumper that is used for compatability reasons for older computers. If you have that jumper installed you are only going to see 32gigs. I like Maxtor drives a lot but the manuals always seem to show that jumper installed. You didn't mention the models of your Maxtors so I can't give any details but that is most likely your problem if you've already tried formatting with NTFS and FAT32 from a Win98 boot. Look very carefully at your drives. If you have them set as master there is probably a vertical jumper near the right hand side which sets the master and then a horizontal jumper about 3 pins over on the top. The horizontal one is probably your problem. Again, read the little manual sheet that came with the drive. It explains it on the trouble shooting side.

they are the maxtors that they sold them at STAPLES. 40 gig. I am not sure what the model number is but i know they are ATA 100 - 7200 RPMs. and i have both drives set on Cable Select. i hope that helps.

you need a 98 startup disk

put it in the floppy and start up the computer

then start with cd rom support (enter)

wait for the a:

after a: appears then type fdisk

so it shows a:fdisk then hit enter

enter at the question do you want to enable large disk blah blah blah

when the list of opyions appear choose 4 then hit enter

make sure that its showing the full amount of your harddrive (there will be a descrepancy of 24 mb per 1000 mb>or about 1 gig on a 40 gig harddrive (this is normal)

if your showing 32 gigs remove the partition and make a new partition using all the space

choice 1 makes a primary partition choice 3 removes the partitions you specify

then when you are listed right in fdisk escape till you are back to the a: prompt

then restart and hit enter at the first question do you want cdrom support (enter = yes)

then to format

at the a:

type format c:/s with a space between format and c this copies needed files over

you should get a prompt after that that says warning all data will be lost hit y for yes then hit enter

when this step is done you can reload windows 2000 and have all your space🙂

but before doing this MAKE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED AND HAVE ALL NECESSARY FILES TO INSTALL YOUR VIDEO SOUND MODEM ETC AS IT MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE TO GET THEM LATER just a warning

let me know if you need any further assistance and yes i gave basic advice as it seems you are new if you already knew these steps please forgive me and disreguard this message

hope this helps

Have you checked the jumpers?
Have you tried using the MaxBlast installation software (if that only see's 32gigs you have a jumper problem)
Have you tried formatting with NTFS?
Have you tried booting from a Win98 CD/Disk and run FDISK and format from there.

There aren't any other answers to your problem. You need to try each of these things to eliminate the confusion. The easiest thing to do is check for the jumpers I am talking about. Go here and read this PDF file from Maxtors site.

http://www.maxtor.com/products/DiamondMax/diamondmaxPlus/InstallGuide/r_guide.pdf

Page 5 of that document shows the settings if you have the Cynlinder limiting jumper installed. Page 2 shows how to setup the jumpers WITHOUT the cynlinder limiting jumper.

Your question has been answered by someone in this thread. You just need to figure out which answer you need.

Thanks man. and nope i dont know all these info. i am gonna try it when i get home. i will let you no when i get to something. thanks for your answer.

The Bios still says 32 Gig. i dunno how to change that. i created a primary partition 3 times and they all come out to 32 gig. i guess i will try the jumper? anymore info?

You figured it out most likely, older mobo's had a limitation at 32gig. Some can be flashed with a newer bios and overcome this limitation, not all though. What motherboard are you using?

I don't think Maxblast software works for Win2k or you could go that route.
