4400+ X2 for cheap!

Ah why would you want that if you can get a 4600+ X2 for $3 less? Cache has very little performance difference.

You can't really overclock cache though.. and having more cache memory helps you OC better.

What?!? That doesn't even make sense, dude...

First off, when you OC the processor, the cache also gets faster because it is ON the processor...

Secondly, the cache has no bearing on how far you can OC in a positive way. It is more likely to limit you, as there is more die space that could have a flaw in it...

The reason you buy the model with larger cache is that it offers 3-5% better performance at the same clockspeed of the smaller cache models at the same clock speed, and you can't add more cache by OC'ing. You might get a 100 mhz or more better OC with the smaller cache, however, which would over come the cache deficit, but that is a chance you have to take.

Can someone recommend what X2 I should shoot for if I want to equal or beat my current CPU in gaming performance? I have an AMD 643000+ at 2.8Ghz and would like to upgrade my CPU but not at a loss of performance in gaming.

Thanks for any advice
 
The 4400+ with 2x1mb cache is likely a better processor than the 4600+, if only due to the cache. You can always OC to 4600+ speeds if you like, with minimal effort/risk, and get the added benefits of a bigger cache.

Regardless, the real bargain in all of this is the 3800 X2, not the higher priced processors, IMO.

With any of the X2's, I doubt you'll see a loss of performance. It just depends on what your budget for upgrading is.

Edit: Especially because you are prone to overclocking 😛
 
in single threaded games u will end up with less performance if u cannot get the x2 to go to the same speed as your 3000... having a dual core doesn't help much unless the app is coded to take advantage of it... if u get a 3800 and only get it to oc to 2.5 then u will probably see worse perofrmance in many current games... u may not need to get to 2.8, because having a dual core will let some other tasks on your pc run on on core and your game on another, but beware that u have to get pretty close...
 
cubeless speaks the truth - if you dont get that x2 to 2.8ghz your performance will decrease (except in well coded multithreaded apps taking advantage of that second core).
And I dont know why, but I get lower memtest86 memory bandwidth report with a x2 4400 1mbx2 than a venice 3000+ ... both confirmed in dual channel mode. Two sticks.
ps- I have an opteron 146@2720 and I wont bother considering upgrading the cpu or the video card again till UT2007 comes out 😉.
Fact of the matter is, if you get a cpu over 2.7ghz, then only performance increase in general will come from a cpu you can get clocked even higher, and in general, 2.8ghz is close to the air cooling ceiling.
pps- if my damned crappy MSI SLI motherboard could actually put out a solid 1.55v I could do 2.8Ghz, but it has no vcore settings higher than that to compensate for undervolting. WHAA

BECAUSE, the 4600 doesn?t come with a cool/free hat and tee-shirt! I get a 10% performance boost in games with the AMD hat!!! 😛
