Captured munitions and explosives destruction. Best way to make sure this dangerous stuff isn't used to kill people.

It's easy to discredit the amusement factor of this until you see it for yourself. I guarantee you will sound like a slack-jawed idiot as well :p

I used to go to Picatinny arsenal in NJ and I have to admit, it's fun watching shit blow up on a big scale (I have never seen anything even close to this). Then I am depressed at how much money and manpower went into vaporizing those resources. I wonder how much human resources went into that 429 ton explosion.

im not trying to discredit anything. i probably sound like a slack-jawed idiot just watching this stuff on a computer screen. i want to know why explosions make people feel this way.

Yeah I dunno what it is. But I definitely have a desire to constantly witness, and sometimes even help create, big explosions and noises. It proves a thrill that is basically incomparable to anything else, a high that feels so good that you get hooked.

This, despite the fact that I got a firework shot up my leg when I was a little guy. No, it didn't go all the way up, but it get go up my shorts and burned my upper leg, right about halfway up past the knee.
Fireworks and explosions in general, both scare the hell out of me, but also provide me immense joy and entertainment. I have an extreme respect for the very real dangers though, which being injured once, and coming close to injuring a few times, will do that to you.
Number one is I'm a pyro freak. I love fire, it fascinates me to no end, and a campfire can hold my attention for ever, sometimes with the result of unintentionally ignoring others around me. :p

What with digital cameras, camcorders, camera phones, and the like, we really need to bring back atmospheric testing.

You know that all of these demolitions are done by army specialists, right? Sorry if my sarcasmo-meter is broken.

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to fire. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to fire once. That's how Dad did it, that's how America does it... and it's worked out pretty well so far.

You sure your dad just wasn't full out castrated after firing once?

Probably extra demolition material that has to be disposed of for some reason.
They have these controlled explosions occasionally, for that very reason - material has to be disposed of, and you really can't dispose of explosive material in any way short of actually making it explode - so they set up massive controlled detonations to take care of that problem.
Say, not enough room in storage, or it could be dated and needs to be used so that they can replace the old material with possibly material of a different type.
