4200+ X2 EPoX 9npaj problems

I helped a friend setup his new computer: 4200+ X2 w/stock cooling no OC, EPoX 9npaj, 2x1gb OCZ pc3200 (cheap stuff), ATi x800XL, Aspire 520w, NEC dvdrw, 120gb Samsung IDE drive. He is having random lockups, we have tried a few different NForce drivers, including the ones on the CD and hte latest off of NVidia's website...flashed to the latest bios, installed the X2 driver and latest ATi video drivers.

After trying to troubleshoot these problems, I have verified it has no errors running 2 instances of prime 95 and looping 3dmark 2001 for over an hour..memtest86 also passed without problems(it crashed after we thought the latest changes had fixed the computer). I lowered the HTT to 4x, upped CPU voltage by .02v, set memory to 2.7v, chipset to 1.6 and 1.7v and nothing has seemed to really help it. All voltages look stable but for some reason the 12v isn't in the PC Health in the bios and doesn't read in windows, I will try to get the reading and see if that shows any fluctuation if noone has any other ideas; but I doubt the 12v rail being a problem as it didn't crash while running the prime95 and 3dmark together, but ya never know. I also changed hte memory ratio to run at 166mhz to see if it was a memory problem that memtest wasn't catching.

If anyone has any ideas, or has has any similar problems I would very much appreciate your help.

My good ol' buddy doesn't wanna "dump" that unit but he will RMA it if it is still the general consensus as being the problem...but what do ya think is flakin on it?

K after evaluating drsafety's opinion I feel he does not have a valid opinion. So back to the point, I figured the 12v rail would flake and crash while running 2x prime95 and 3dmark at the same time but it does not...so could it jsut be a random dip or is it another rail that is failing?

I would love to test another PSU but I do not have one lying around. WE have narrowed it down a little, it seems his netgear WP111 802.11g is causing the crashed. Without the wireless card in the system it has been running 16 hours, when it is in it crashes within 1 hour. He also has a usb keyboard and that doesn't have any effect on the crashing, but it may possibly be due to the extra power draw from the wireless NIC? I will due more testing to narrow it down to a usb power issue or an issue between the mobo and the NIC.

I think that you are going in the wrong direction trying to trouble shoot the problem. See if you can CAUSE the problem by lowering the voltage tolerances a bit. If a similar error occurs then thats your problem. Upping the voltages only msks the problems and they will return. You can get a DVM for a few bucks. I think I paid like $6 for mine at Harbour Freight.

k, after plugging in 2 mp3 players to stress the usb we have found that the ports are super flaky...sometimes they recognize the mp3 players, sometimes it crashes the system...really weird. Any ideas ?
