What about the CDS 42" on the same site. It is only $1500 and is HDTV. Anyone has experience with that?

It appears to be EDTV (HD -compatible meaning it will take an HD input)
Other sites are listing it as EDTV.

Its 'enhanced definition,' meaning not high-definition, but slightly better than a regular TV. IMO EDTV is a scam

EDTV is not a scam. It is extremely hard to notice the difference at the 42" size between EDTV & HDTV for distances > 7 ft they say. At 50+", I haven't seen any EDTV.

AVSForum has very good info. The Panasonic 42" EDTV is highly recommended at prices like $1600.

But if you really do want 1024x768 at 42" because you will game on it or ?, I saw Fry's was carrying the JVC for $1999. And they use the Panasonic glass so is quite good.

This opinion is utterly without merit. All other things being equal, you can take an EDTV and HDTV and view them from at least six feet away, and be hard pressed to tell the difference.

The difference between 480i (standard definition) and 480p(edtv) is FAR more dramatic than the difference between 480p and 1080i. EDTV is a way to enjoy the brilliance of a plasma for much less than the cost of a true hdtv.
