It's HD capable, you just need a receiver... right? Personally I don't really care about HD broadcast, just 720p for DVDs and the coolness factor of the footprint.

ED only does 480p, not 720p.

WRong, ED does 480p, 720 and 1080.

I have a 42EDTV and it plays HD stuff beautifully.

It will play HD material, but it will scale it down because it' physically only 480p.

So? Does that negate the fact that it plays HD material and looks good? Nope. kthnx

Iron Crotch is correct:
Many ED TVs can actually look far superior to HD capable TVs. depending on their chipsets and glass type.

People are so brainwashed these days when it comes to technology its pathetic.

Go to www.avsforum.com to get some REAL information about AV.

i hate to take it OT more, but i have a hard time believing a 480p screen can reproduce a better image than a true 1080 resolution screen..

doubt it.

maybe the lowest quality 1080 screen you can find from the depths of china, and compare it to the absolute best 480P screen you can get your hands on.

then you might have a chance in hell of being out true 1920x1080

Just because it looks good scaling down HD material doesn't mean it's really doing HD. I'm not brainwashed. I refer people to avsforum daily.

I have an ED Infocus 4805 and know there's more to quality than resolution. Saying the TV is doing 720p or 1080i is just wrong, it can't physically do it.

Getting back on topic, there is a 6% off coupon out there for email customers, up to $15 off, bring the total to $1584.99... looks like you can only use it if your email addy is linked to their email list, though.

Nice price OP!

If you're considering this, spend a few bucks more and get a known good brand plasma such as the Panasonic:

http://www.visualapex.com/plasma/Plasma...chPartNumber=TH-42PWD7UY&MFR=Panasonic

No speakers or tuner included, but I assume if you're getting this expensive of a TV you have your own seperate components.

I don't understand how these cheap brands aren't selling for $1200-$1300 with the Panasonics as inexpensive as they are.

As for ED vs HD, it depends on how you look at it.

It's resolution is obviously ED and not HD, but whether it can 'play back HD material' is a different question.

The computer guy in me wants to say "no it can't". The TV guy in me wants to say "yes it can". There are plenty of 32" CRT 'HDTV' sets out there that can't resolve full HD resolution, but no one complains because they are not fixed-pixel technologies. But does it make them any better at displaying HD resolution? No!

I guess the correct response is that it plays HDTV material at a lower, but still excellent looking, resolution.

Many ED sets will play back OTA and DVD sources and look far better than the HD sets. However, unless something is seriously wrong with the HD set, it will beat the ED with HDTV material.

Sit back 10 feet and they'll probably both look the same. ;)

Shipping is $200 bringing the total to $1799.

B&H has it for $1499 + shipping

Shipping was about $222 for me so $80 less than the "hot deal"

Wait a sec.. Buy.com is selling Norcent PT-4231. B&H is selling Norcent PDP-4231. I don't know what the difference is yet, but I thought I'd point that out.
Or maybe not.. it says Mfr# PT4231 on B&H as well...

I've had that Panny you linked to for over 2 years, and I still can't believe how great it looks on DVD's and HDTV. It's an absolute steal for $1695. Of course, I paid $4000(list $5000) for mine in January 2002 , but I know how the game works. :)

Just for the record, I did do the same side by side comparision with the EDTV 42" Panasonic, and the HDTV 42", and I agree there was a difference, but definately NOT the $2000 difference they were asking.

I have a 42" Panasonic EDTV plasma and the 27" HDTV Syntax Olevia LCD. High-def programming looks FAR superior on the EDTV plasma. And high-def programming looks much better than standard-def on the plasma, thanks to the additional horizontal resolution and content as well as reduced compression. Also, everyone on AVSforums agrees that current DVDs look better on EDTV sets than HDTV, since DVDs are native 480P and have to be upsampled to play on a 720P plasma.

There is a wide quality margin between a Panasonic plasma and cheap Korean brands. I think the Panasonic 42" EDTV plasma at 1800 shipped is a damn steal; I paid 4400 shipped for mine back in 2003, and don't regret it one bit.

I know, doesn't it make you just a little queasy though? Nah, me either, I've had 2 years of great PQ and almost unmatched bragging rights! Hell, I still don't anyone personally besides myself that even has a plasma display. :D

I personally would buy the Panasonic 42" Plasma EDTV at costco. Name Brand, Cheap price, Better set.

And yes DVDs which have 704x480 resolution look better on EDTV's that have 853x480 resolution then on normal HDTV's having resoultion between 1024x768 - 1280x768 - 1920x1080 UNLESS you buy a good scaler like dvdo HD+, then it will look better on the HDTV.

So the solution is, if you watch only movies and standard def TV get an EDTV

however if you watch a lot of 720P / 1080i HDTV and want to be ready for 1080P high Def DVD's which are coming out by christmas, then get a HDTV.

If you want everything to look good, just buy a nice scaler and either will look great (HD will look better than ED)
