that 42" plasma looks like a really good deal. cheapest on pricegrabber is $950 + shipping.

n/m it says available for in-store pickup only, and i'm not anywhere near a microcenter. good deal for those who are

I stopped in at MC yesterday and the picture on the 42" is REALLY good. And for the price...??? Worth it!

Most 42" plasmas have rectangular pixels instead of square pixels.

Price seems to be $799 before rebate

Just thought I would point out that the 42" is HD ready (no built in tuner). The 46" Has a built in tuner. I wouldn't want people pulling the trigger and missing that fine detail.

Cheers for a great buy! Thanks OP!

HDTV resolution is 1820 horizontal pixels and 1080 lines. Since the TV has only 1024 horizontal pixels, you are loosing about half the maximum resolution.

Or, another way to look at it...
The TV has about 1 million total pixels (1024 x 1024). But HDTV is about 2 million pixels (1820 x 1080). So the TV can only display half the pixels.

1080p resolution is 1920x1080 = 2073600 pixels.
720p (Which is also HD) is 1280x720 = 921600 pixels.

This TV is 1024x1024 = 1048576. It has rectangular pixels, and more lines than 720p.

Most budget 42" HDTV plasmas are 1024x768 = 786432 pixels.

On a decent 42" plasma viewed from a decent distance you will not be able to tell a difference between any of them, except for the 1080p if you are watching a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD disc.

And I would so buy this TV for 699, but there are no Microcenters around. :(

It's a Hitachi panel that's why it has the squared dimension size.
I paid $1199 last year @ the same MC store and have been very happy with it. Its black is the only weakness but what do you expect for the plasma @ that price?

Good deal! Regarding the res, yes, 1024x1024 was pretty standard for 42" Plasmas in 2006. Still on many new ones in 2007... Anyway, at 8+ feet, your eyes can't tell the difference in the resolution, so don't get hung up on that. The color and contrast always make more of a difference to your eyes for viewing material TV/movies, etc... The only exception is if you are using it as a computer monitor...

Has Akai gotten any bettter in the customer service department? They sold a lot of these through Walmart. People who bought them at $999 had the screens fail after 6mos to a year.....when they called up Walmart and Akai for warranty, they were told the part numbers for the replacement parts were discontinued and the warranties were never fullfilled.

Just a warning. They may be cheap, but if they fail....good luck.

Edit: For the record, I'm tempted.

and no plasma right now can do 1080p..they can only do 720p and 1080i. The resolution on my Hitachi 42" plasma is 1024x1080. But it was $1300..this is a really good deal. A lot of older plasmas they have marked down can only handle 480p, so it is a good idea to double check the resolution, and this one is nice deal.

Not true! The $10k Panasonic TH-65PX600U is a 65" 1080P Plasma. I think there are only three or four 1080p Plasmas on the market and all are outrageously priced. I think Hitachi, Panasonic, Samsung and Pioneer all have 1080p plasmas by now.

Mmm, yes, I think the new PZ700U line (2007 models, 10G panels) has 3 screen sizes that are 1080p, starting at 50", and a 58" and updating the TH-65PX600U with the TH-65PZ700U. There will also be 2 "premium" models at 50" and 58" in the PZ750U line, also 1080p.
