HDTV resolution is 1820 horizontal pixels and 1080 lines. Since the TV has only 1024 horizontal pixels, you are loosing about half the maximum resolution.
Or, another way to look at it...
The TV has about 1 million total pixels (1024 x 1024). But HDTV is about 2 million pixels (1820 x 1080). So the TV can only display half the pixels.
