depends where in CA... From Red Bluff to Eureka is cheap as kentucky and lots of other areas. It's the heavy populated and south of SF coastal regions which are considered expensive by comparison.
 
I'm also surprised so many people are paid by the hour..is that normal in IT? I havn't been paid by the hour since working a union job over 10 years ago. Salary ever since I became exempt/managment. Course some of the hourly guys do better LOL.

I am not paid by hour, but my paystub shows my hourly rate.. I assume that's the same for others too.
 
lol what the hell is the matter with you people? Complaining that $40/hr is not enough, I'd be more than financially secure on $15/hr. So materialistic.
 
I'm almost 30 and I make $25/hr in the SF Bay Area (desktop support). So in other words, I'm barely above the poverty line around here. 😉 🙂

I want to get an actual long-term career going (sorry, I don't consider desktop support a viable long-term career), but I have no idea where to focus my efforts in IT that will bring in good money and a relatively stable career. It's either that or get out of IT and start my own business. Never seem to have the money or the time to either start my business or concentrate on improving my skills enough move up in IT.

I am in your range...hoping to up that a lot this year.

My younger brother makes 6 figures and works about 3 days a week on average, plus owns his own side business that makes enough to expand each year and pay his fiancee a nice salary from and allow them to pull money out for nice things.

He does high-end network deployments.

Facts are though, a lot here are going to exaggerate and make claims.

Personally I think if my brother posted here he'd be attacked for buying a 20th Anniversary VW GTI and 'if he was making that kind of money' why not a better car?

I wouldn't attack him 🙂.

People like different things. I know a few guys that are making good £££ but they choose to drive cheaper and econimical cars (they drive a lot of miles). One guy prefers to sail and hence rent out boats as they are sure dam expensive to buy! Another has his helicopters lessons.

People like different things and they don't see sense in buying something that they don't see as being 'worth' it to them. But the things they do enjoy they do spend that bit more on 🙂

41/hr is nothing. If you work as a contractor, you could easily make 80/hr. My friend who is a DBA routinely charges 120/hr at companies. You don't get benefits such as medical and what not but the money is great.
THe only thing that sucks is if you have to live away from your family during the weekdays. He gets to fly back home for the weekend.

I remember that when I was working FT. A bunch of us saw the contract and thought 'WTF?' Client was charged ~$100/h, and we were paid ~$35-40.
 
As mentioned numerous times, it completely depends on the location, and the line of work.

$41+/hour isn't all that far from a six figure income, and it of course is not all that unusual for many positions (including moderately experienced actuaries) to command such a salary.
 
This thread is hilarious. People talking about billing people $100/hr, like as if that's what they earn. Show me a business that has NO COSTS or overhead and I'll show you my pet pig who can sing the alphabet.

Then we have the kiddies posting about how $40/hr is crap, and you can make way more if you know what you're worth! I guess they're too ignorant to know that to many people $50k/year is awesome money.

I'm sure the vast majority of us are happy with what this country considers relatively normal salaries. If you get a job and establish yourself, you should see steady growth, but that doesn't mean getting paid $50/hr overnight. If you own your own business, sure, you could see high hourly margins, but you have to factor in all costs, demand, how many customers you're getting, unpaid work time, etc. Let's be realistic here.
 
I work on a per job fee basis, so it's hard to guage how much it is hourly. It can range from $25-$200 per hour.

I regularly do expert witness work in courts for $125/hour, minimum of 8 hours.

doing what, out of curiosity?

i talked to my father last week, i plan on buying his business in 3-5 years. he makes a little over 100k/yr right now. this is a small town, he stretches (4 kids, 3 cars, motorcycle) but is comfortable.

id live on a bit less than he does, having just 2 kids, and would save/invest which is something he never made a habit of. ill be *quite* comfortable if i can make in a few years what hes making now. not a dream job, but one i know, and can do, and for the money and security i decided its worth staying.

Last time I worked for someone else, he billed me out at $100/hour and paid me $17/hour.

It is just sad that people cannot use the correct to too and two or your vs youre or there their and theyre or even then vs than. It bothers me.

Im 24 my car is paid off. My home will be more than half paid for by the end of the year. I have a wonderful loving wife. At this point I could really care less if I am working for someone else or not.

I am a teacher - it is difficult to start your own business involving this profession unless you want to start a religious private school (I do not.) I did quite well in my computer science courses and then I realized that its not about how much money you make.. its about happiness so now I try to help our youth. What do YOU do?

Ya know, maybe I'm just jaded because my gf and I have to deal with them so often, but unless she's involved in research...I've never met a hard working pharmacist.
 
I make less than $12/hr! Sometimes being a marine biologist just ain't worth it. Someday I'll go back to school for a teaching masters. Then I'll be rolling in the big bucks with a teacher's salary.
