40GB Seagate Refurb: $30 AR @ CompUSA

Found this in the store yesterday ... don't know if it's advertised. Anyway, plain white box, $50 - $20 MIR = $30
They still had quite a few at the Colorado Springs store. I'll post the model # when I get home again.

How safe is it to buy refurb drives? I was kind of tempted when I saw them at CompUSA but managed to resist.

I don't know. For now I'm going to use it primarily for backing up stuff from my main drive, and holding large but transient data sets for some work I'm doing. If it survives that for a couple months, I'll trust it with more important stuff.

Whatever ... cheapest price on pricewatch for a 40GB drive is $42 for a 5400RPM no-name drive from some etailer I never heard of. This is a 7200RPM drive from Seagate at a B&M (easy returns if you need to). Go thread crap somewhere else.

LOL! I was thinking the same thing but didn't say anything.

I agree, the price is decent, but I don't like the $20 MIR.

Returns are very difficult if you've already cut out the UPC code to send for a rebate... so the warranty is only good until you claim your rebate, which is usually within one month of purchase. Plus you pay tax on the pre-rebate price, so add on another couple bucks. I'd rather take my chances on a non refurb, retail, no rebate WD 80gb model for $70 (<a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://)

No one's thread crapping. $0.75 / gb is good but not great, especially for a refurbished model.

sign at the store says ad is wrong - it is a 5400 not a 7200. there were also some 80 gigs mixed in, but I didn't see a price on them (Arlington, TX)...

I saw this at CUSA too.

They're in a kiosk type display in the middle of a main isle.

I don't understand how they can ask $30 for a refurbished HD when they offer a brand-new 40GB HD for $30 on their new-stock HD wall.

The new ones are 7200RPM. I think they're ATA100 but I could be wrong because the caffeine is wearing off.

Weren't any new $30 drives at the one I was at ... I'd certainly take a new one over a refurb, Cheapest I saw was like $70+ AR for an 80GB IIRC

Yea, returns after rebates can be a bitch ... so I'm thrashing it with bonnie++ as I write this, before I send in the rebate. SOP for new drives 🙂 ... and I can't hear the drive at all 😀
Overall, I think it's a good deal ... minimal outlay for a reasonable amount of storage. To do better per GB you'd likely have to spend alot on a bigger drive.

It was a WD in their usual plastic packaging on their new HD wall display.
I didn't see any mention of them being refurbished.
The Seagates were in plain white boxes.

I just got the flyer out of my car trunk.
It shows a refurbished WD 40GB/7200RPM
Item #311047

I'll try to get back to CUSA and let you know.

Hmm ... these were on the same shelf as the new drives ... maybe they were out of the cheap WDs by the time I got there.

Been thrashing it all night with Bonnie ... no problems so far 🙂 Just warm to the touch. Not quite as fast on most tests as the 80GB WD I have in there (but faster on a few). And silent.

just ordered the 120gb SATA version off newegg. 70 bucks. and if you live in socal it gets to your door in under 2 days.

how much more silent will these be than my wd 120se's?

This deal is pretty good even without the rebate, seeing as most B&M stores are still charging upwords of 80 dollars for a 40 GB drive...

I'd trust the refurbs just as much as I trust the new ones, really. I've heard stories of HDs breaking down a month after being taken out of the box.
