I'm buying one of these drives today.
Both are the same price (please don't correct me on this point, I'm in Canada, pricewatch is useless to me, and the place I'm buying from they are the same price).

I've checked out Storage Review, the 60GXP takes most of the tests. So I would say it's the faster drive, but after all the big scare with the 75GXP, I wonder if it might not be better to buy the Quantum...

I'm leaning towards the 60GXP because my 30Gig 75GXP is quite happy still.

Any thoughts?

The 60GXP seems a lot more reliable than the 45GB 75GXP. Go with the 60GXP :) Before I got the 60GXP, I thought the 75GXP was 'quiet'. Now I know what is really 'quiet'. But then I must have to hear the cuda4 and see if I can hear anything :)

Actually... not to open a can of worms... but the 75GXP series dont really have problems as such..

I experienced what a lot of people have (clicking and such) and it turns out that it is a timing issue with w2k shutdown and the drive. An interleave using drive fitness test from IBM cleans it out.

I replaced my 3 75gxp's with 3 60gxp's and I've had them for about 3 months and have had zero problems. They are quieter, faster, and cooler than the 75gxp's. Couldn't give you any personal info on the Quantum though.

Well I realy like Quantum drives so personally I would suggest it, however the AS is not based on the good controller that the KA/KX/LM were (those had a controller based on the SCSI Atlas drives). So I guess I'd have to go along with StoreageReview's leaderboard and suggest the 60GXP.

I have a 40GB 60GXP on this computer and I love it. Much quieter and faster than the Quantum.

I have a Quantum on my other computer and it sucks. Too loud and too slow.

Just my 2 cents.

Noriaki,I was debating the same choice as you also with the Maxtor model but I`ve decided on the IBM 60GXP drive mainly because it faster and I can get it cheaper here in the UK then the other brands, also my old IBM as been running great, afterall any drive can arrive faulty or go bad so you might as well try and get the HD of your choice they all come with 3 year warranty anyway :).

I'm happy with my 40 Gig 60GXP. Very fast and quiet. Never had any issue with 75GXP's either. I put a Quantum 30 Gig LM in a buddies PC. Very fast, but Gawd is that thing noisy! I understand the AS is not s fast or noisy as the LM.

Yeah the Quantum LM is suppose to be very good drive, but way to loud for me.

Well I guess it's the 60GXP then.
Thanks for your input guys.

I'm sure that you've alraedy boguht the 60GXP. The Quantum AS is not as fast as the Quantum LM. Therefore, it's pretty pointless to get the Quantum AS as the gain is minimal. The 60GXp is quiet and hell fast. :)

How fast does the 60 gxp feels ? Compared to say maxtor fastest ide HDS.
i bet alittle faster but not a whole lot noticeable if you already have a maxtor and then go with a 60 gxp.
Plus how do u know if its ok to trust IBM still ? What if something else happens with these.

How do I know if I can trust IBM. I've got numerous friends using IBM and I'm using one myself. :). If you can't trust them. Don't buy them. :)

Get the 60GXP...i just got one, and I love it! :) Compared to my other 7200rpm drive...this thing is silent...even my 80mm case fans are louder.

You shouldn't have problems...but if you do, IBM's RMA service seems to be pretty good--you dont hafta talk to anyone...just run their program, and if it's bad, the proggy will spit a RMA # at ya.

pillage2001 what HDs you and all of yours friends have ? thanks
I just dont know anyone but i was going to get a 75 gxp series IBM but didnt.

eLiu but just the point of not having a computer for 2 to 5 days or even losing all of your data is the point. Its not a fun thing to happen :(
Even if you do backup you always have stuff being updated like favs, icq list , aim buddy list , email , etc
So you have to backup contantly to make sure you have everything backed up or you could lose a lot of updated stuff if you do it only everyday or month.
