Hey guys,

From the past year a lot of my friend's 40gb PS3's bluray drives have been failing. All the people i know purchased them when they officially made the price cut and had Spiderman 3 included. Just curious if you guys had the same problem.

Poll!

I purchased my 40gb when it came out and no problems so far. Granted, the PS3 isn't my primary console and I don't watch a whole lot of blurays, but it still has seen some pretty good use.

I don't know if it's the blu ray drive that failed but mine just caved last night. Mine was the Spiderman bundle as well. How can you tell it's the drive? Mine turns on then off then flashes red. I'm guessing if it was the drive the console would at least turn on properly?

My 40Gb BR laser shat it's pants just short of two years into ownership. Bought a replacement KEM400a unit off ebay and fixed it myself in 20 minutes.

How do you tell whether it's the BR drive or the motherboard? The console should power up and go to the XMB if it's just the drive right?

Pretty much. If it's the BR laser only then the unit will operate perfectly, all XMB functions, HDD, etc, but no media will work, i.e., no CD,DVD or BR. When you load a disc the blue light will still come on, but nothing happens. That is exactly what happened to mine.

BRD drive in my 40GB recently failed, well outside of warranty. Have to order a new laser assembly and fix it at some point(80GB is still going fine). It was used very heavily, either as a movie player or gaming a rather excessive amount of time.

9 months in my blue-tooth card started giving me issues. Finally died 2 days out of warranty. Wound up fixing it myself by buying a new card off e-bay for $15 shipped.
