Fooey: the description is for a 7200 RPM Drive, but the Manufacturer # is ST0154000U, which is a 5400 RPM drive. hmm.

That manufacture # is for the 7200rpm not the 5400rpm. It is the DM40+ series. Check maxtor site.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this HD is UDMA 66. I need UDMA 100. KT-7 RAID mobo. Every little bit helps.

well actually it depends...you could get the special bonus 5 gig boxes and those are the newer DM45+ which are ata100. I don't think ata100 helps..atleast I don't see a difference.

HAving ATA100 helps psychologically. =] I recommend people to go for it as I doubt anyone really has 40gb drives left.

what is the point of writing about what you "Need" here? If you don't find this deal hot, pass up on it. I have no clue why you wrote about your "needs" here. Judging by what the others posted regarding the ata100 issue, they don't care about your "needs" either :)

Not a flame, just curious.

btw, the ata100 card is back in stock (seattle), so if you get both, you qualify for the $50 maxtor rebate.

Any chance the HOT deal with the ATA100 PCI card w/ purchase of a Maxtor drive will return ? I'm seeing the ATA100 cards out of stock in most areas and I am in the market for this exact setup. Thanks for the assist.

When I got my drives from staples they had a sticker upgraded to ata 100. So you must check the box before you can say they are ultra 66. HTH By the way they fly in raid.

A quick tale of warning in this deal, and a success story.

I placed my order for the drive and some binder clips and used the $40 off $150 coupon online. I used their online form to request the pricematch with OD.com and got this response:

<< Hello Jason,

Thank you for the information regarding your price match.
I'm sorry but i am unable to price match the Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM HARD DRIVE with
Office Depot. There was a typografic error on there Web Site. Regular price is 179.99.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if we can be of further assistance.

Thank you for your patience concerning this matter.

I guess they would be the experts on 'typografic' errors (see how many you can spot in their message above!) Anyway, I called in and they did the pricematch no problem.

Also, if you want to pick up the ATA/100 card while you're at it, do a second order for it, add on a pair of Altec Lansing speakers for $29.98-$10 MIR, and use a $25 off $75 coupon. Pretty good deal all around.

$110.49 for drive + binder clips (order #1 using $40 off $150)
$49.98 ATA/100 card
$29.98 Altec Lansing speakers
-$25 off $75 on second order
-$50 MIR ATA/100 Card
-$10 MIR speakers
-------
$105.45 total

Enjoy!

Jason

P.S. - Here's the link for the Maxtor ATA/100 card rebate.

Thx to JasonH and Rossman for the great info on this deal. I tried a phone call to the local Staples and they told ne they didn't pricematch from websites anymore. I called 1-800-3-STAPLES to pricematch the Maxtor 40 gig and the first CSR told me the OD web price was a typo (sound familiar?). I called the nearest OD and they verified the price as $149.99. Back on the phone to another Staples CSR who verified the 149.99 price at which point I slapped a $40 off 150 coupon on him. I just ordered the Maxtor ATA/100 controller from Staples on a second call along with a TB Montego A3D sound card for $79 and tossed a $25 off 75 at that deal. This is my first PM and a GREAT deal.

Maxtor 40 gig HD - $109
Maxtor ATA/100 controller $50
TB Montego S/C - $28

As has been posted, there's a $50 rebate from Maxtor on this HD/controller combo :D

Just ordered my hard drive and a box of pens. $119.25 delivered. Does it mater where I get the ATA100 card? Does this drive need it to work?
