Reviews are fairly universal. Nice performance. Crappy price.

It's about 70% performance of 4090, for about 75% the price.

At the $1200, I feel most people willing to spend that much will just spend the extra for the top of the line 4090, or they wait for AMD, so I expect sales of this one to be sluggish.

Less wattage/less heat/smaller card size is also a factor for a lot of people. I think it will sell out.

Some people like me, even if I had the money, don't want a fat power hungry monster card.

It beats the 3090Ti while using significantly less power. It looks like it will match up to the 7900XTX, but at a higher price. And well, its also using the 12VHPWR plug.

EDIT: The AIB models are really expensive! The Asus Strix is $1450!!

Probably Nvidia's plan the whole time

Exactly. These upper level options are just stepping stones to the real deal, max margin (for the OEM) part. The cheapest option is the volume, the most expensive parts are the margin, and the stuff in between is there for marketing reasons.

TechpowerUp indicates that while yeah, it's way more efficient (which is great) it uses the 4090 everything so it's still super huuuuuge. That's a bummer, as it seems to operate really well at 300W or less.

So it's still just fat.

And if you are stepping up to a case that can handle it, spend the extra money and have the 4090 and be done for two years or whatever. The 5090 gets silicon that will have questionable increases in density and efficiency so this the big leap generation imo.

If AMD's benchmarks hold true, the 7900XTX should outperform the 4080 by 15 %- 20% in pure raster games. For RT games, the 4080 should hold a significant lead on average, though some of the newer games the 7900XTX should still have a lead even with RT on.

It's rather nice product with bad price. I really don't see how it can be priced like that. I just don't see how it can possible by costlier to manufacture that 7900 XT(X).

Jensen may be a good engineer, but he's terrible at assessing product value. It will go under $1k when reality sinks in, as it did when he unlaunched the 4080 12gb.

I'd bet they don't care about selling many of these. They will probably use the GPU chip in this one in tons of high end gaming laptops.

I think nVidia may have priced the 4080 in part to goad AMD to price higher. Now that they didn't, perhaps you will see a further cut down AD102 (4080 Ti) in a few months and they will cut the price of the 4080 16 GB down to $999.

Honestly if you have so much disposable money that a 4090 is appealing you're probably someone who should buy the 4090 Ti when it's released and then the 5090 too and so on since money is of no object tbh.

It's a great card at a bad price - performance, efficiency, noise, power all good - just let down by the price. The question is who will buy it? Either you are rich enough to get the best for $1600, or you are on a budget and $1200 is way too much. More worrying for most of us is what it means for the 4070 and 4060 - if the 4080 is that expensive then they will also cost too much.

Fine core, terrible price, and aesthetics.

Looks like virtually all the gains for Lovelace come from the higher clocks and L2 based on relative RT drop off (40% RT drop for both Ampere and Lovelace, so its questionable how much better 3rd gen RT cores really are).

Lot of performance from a relatively svelte 370mm2 core. By comparison AD102's 608mm2 and N31's 533mm2 of silicon for an additional 20-30% more performance seem like... a lot of extra silicon.

AD102 certainly seems like it is obnoxiously large for the performance difference between it and AD103.

It's 60% bigger for 71% more SM and 50% more cache and bus width. Seems about right, but finding games that really benefit from a 4090 is the challenge.

AD102 is only 5% smaller than GA102. AD103 is 24% smaller than GA103 and AD104 is 25% smaller than GA104. Obviously the massive increase of TSMC wafer prices played into the die size but they wanted AD102 to be big enough to ensure it was faster than AMD.

Probably best to ignore GA103 considering how late that came out, and what the target market was. It never really saw the light of day as a proper desktop GPU. AD104 is definitely much smaller than GA104 though, and I'm certainly not expecting $399 and $499 cards with that chip any time soon.

With Ampere the 10GB on the 3080 was questionably, but at least even with that card being a big slab of silicon it was still at reasonable high end pricing and the 3090 had Nvidia's traditional questionable halo premium for a small performance gain.

Even people buying super cars can be picky and want some "value".

The people buying the 4090ti while having a 4090 are likely doing it because they are bored, imo. If any enthusiast bought a 4090 at this point, I'd say its a fair investment is all. I am prepared for future disappointment, I think in the near term (2-3 years) cards might get more efficient but nvidia certainly built a huge and brutishly fast chip in the 4090.

I bought a Vette this fall and while I still hate myself for it on some level it's opened my eyes to how relatively cheap PCs are when compared to many people's habits here. My list of Day 1 things to "fix" after buying it cost more than a 4090.
