Is its remarkable how quickly I could reproduce your number, how did you arrive at yours???

Even these numbers show twice better improvement compared to 2070, but three times weaker improvement than what 3070 brought.

I just used US inflation figures for the Other Goods and Services category since the big rise in inflation in the last couple years has primarily and averaged the two and three year totals since there wasn't even 2.5 years between the launches.

There does not appear to be a single 4070 model in the Newegg top 100 best sellers. 2 3060s, 2 4070ti, and for some mind boggling reason a 3070ti selling for over $600? WTF M8?

EDIT: On Amazon there is one model in the top 20. While the 4070ti looks to be wildly popular, along with the 3060. It seems like 12GB is the magic number for VRAM with Nvidia shoppers. There is a 3070 in the top 20 for over $500. This is why we can't have nice things.

Oh, and that Krisfix dude has everyone worried. GPU braces are 3 of the top 20 sellers. To shoot the messenger with an anti-material rifle; this is the same guy that started the panic about 6000s series cards dying like flies and it turning out they were all abused mining cards. I have decided not to take the sag problem too seriously considering the source.

I was browsing around this weekend, and the 4070 is public enemy number one. Saw a lot of builds using RDNA2 as well. Seems like it is selling more RDNA2, 4070ti, and 3060s than 4070s. 😝

The 3060 is a little too weak but it doesn't make me that mad. If it could just get to $300 (where I have bought a couple for builds) or less where the 2060 lived I'd be less inclined to give it hate.

Its reasonably efficient, reasonably capable, has enough memory for the next few years, is small. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Many worse decisions could be made.

I mean, 3060 is not bad if it existed in a vacuum, but considering that 6700XT start at only $20 more, yeah, it's bad.

Selling at MSRP was kind of the norm before Mining.

Not at launch with 70 series cards. They used to be tough to find at launch back when they were something people got excited about.

The card is good in isolation, but very disappointing considering how it compares to last gen.

I don't see how that's possible, but I wouldn't put it past them. If the 4070 doesn't sell at $600, maybe they'll try for $800 with the 5070?

They backed down with the 30 and gave us terrible VRAM options.
Maybe it wasn't backing down... so much as cutting corners.

Tbh that's still a clear win for the 4070 in my eyes - the RX 6950XT's one big advantage is raster performance and it just isn't that much faster in raster to offset all the other disadvantages (power, size, features, DLSS > FSR). Even in absolute performance it is likely to drop behind in future games. Sure you can argue about VRAM but in another review I saw fully path traced Cyberpunk runs at literally 5 * the speed on a 4070 over 6800XT due generally better RT performance, shader re-orderering, and DLSS 3. Yes the 6950XT will see some minor wins on badly optimised console ports with minimal RT due to VRAM, but it will get utterly destroyed in any future heavy RT games.

I just checked all of the 10 reviews of 4070 cards at Techpowerup, and every single card including Nvidia Funders edition has 2 of 8 positions for RAM ICs unpopulated.

WHERE ARE THE 16 GB CARDS?!

Are they coming later?

You need more than a heat gun. Here's a hint:

256 bit interface --> 8 RAM ICs
192 bit interfacte --> 6 RAM ICs

Igor's Lab says board makers are already receiving rebates from Nvidia to make MSRP cards feasible and maybe even allow for further price adjustments.

I recently discussed the prices and the profit margins of the board partners for the GeForce RTX 4070 and also noted that there is hardly any financial leeway left for the manufacturers, especially for the cheapest models, i.e. the so-called MSRP cards (cards that are supposed to be sold at maximum MSRP). This is reflected on the one hand in the guaranteed availability, which is still given without any problems even days after the launch, and on the other hand in the design of the cards, where they make an effort to reduce the costs ex works to the maximum.

These prices are yes FoB (“Free on Board”), which I have already explained in the article linked below. Even though the first models are already available below the RRP and even the better models have become significantly cheaper in some cases, the prices still seem relatively constant even days after the launch. However, that could change soon, because NVIDIA now does nothing different than, for example, at the time with the rather poorly selling non-A chips of the GeForce RTX 2070 and 2080 according to several sources: There is a so-called “rebate” promotion. Behind this is this time an additional payment (or rebate for new orders) to the manufacturers of up to 50 USD for these so-called MSRP cards, which on the one hand increases the possible leeway at the FoB and on the other hand also lets the manufacturers breathe a little freer again if you don’t pass on everything (right away).

@Kocicak - they also explain the extra RAM ICs room on the 4070 boards as room for the 4060 Ti which could end up using the same PCB.

NVidia makes most of it's chip packages pin compatible, so chips can easily be swapped between boards. The same board would likely work with a 4080 chip, AD103, and 16GB.

But the 4070 chip, AD104 is 192 bit bus chip, and the GDDR chips are 32 bits wide, so can only populate (192/32) = 6 of the memory pads.

Not on these boards. AD106 is 128 bit bus part, so could only populate (128/32) 4 of the memory pads. So here it would be a 4x2GB = 8GB. With 4 empty memory pads left.

The only way you get 8 chips on AD106 is if you use 2 chips/channel which would require a new custom board, and the only reason to do that is build 16GB version. I'm doubtful this will happen.

For example, our largest retailer has a list of 8 last sold GPUs on the site. 2 out of 8 GPUs sold were 4070. Other are: 4070 Ti, GT 1030, RX 6700 XT, RTX 3060 8G, RTX 3060 12G, RX 6650 XT.

I believe that the price drop will be triggered only once AMD releases the competitor.
