Our electric bill is 175$/mo, and our rate is about $0.08/kWh; cheap.

I pay around $.07/kWh, less if I had interruptible AC, which isn't worth it, IMHO.
That's pretty cheap. My 8 cent figure is after all taxes and fees, so in reality it's a little less.

Some places can be like 14 cents/kWh tho.. yikes.

Another reason not to live in California

We paid $155 last month, live in North TX. Have a 5 bedroom 2-story. Usually kept the A/C at 75, and we pay a ridiculous $.123 per KwH.

meh, if you lived in Australia, that would be a fairly normal bill, normally mine is around $580-600 during winter and $500ish the rest of the year

What the hell do you people use to generate electricity down there, faberge eggs?

nah, just lack of competition means higher prices, we generally pay more for everything here, fuel, food, electricity, rego on cars etc, it cost me nearly $1000 just to register my car in june

Heh, it is $78 a year for registration where I live and you should have seen the outrage when they wanted to raise it to even that level.

Here is my last electric bill:
You have a new e-Bill from ComEd - Commonwealth Edison
e-Bill Information

Due Date: 08/15/2005
Amount Due: $24.39
Account Balance: $24.39
I own 4 computers and an AC that I run when I get home from work. It's not like I'm trying to conserve....

ours is usually $75/mo. but we've been using the central air (and regular AC when sleeping) for the entire month... I am afraid to see the next bill.

mine was $307.00 :|

i moved the A/C setting from 76 up to 80 after i got that.

My hot tub sucks down the juice too and i know the crappy windows i have are of no help.

My computer uses 135W while idle and 165W while 100% duty.

The very most I could possibly save by turning my computer off at night is

Assuming 100% CPU usage thw whole month:

118.8kWh/mo @ 24hrs = $9.54
79.20kWh/mo @ 16hrs = $6.34
---
$3.20

Assuming Idle the whole month:

97.20kWh @ 24hrs = $7.78
64.80kwh @ 16hrs = $5.18
---
$2.60

Oh! Can't forget about my monitor.

It draws 24W.

17.28kWh/mo @ 24hrs = $1.38
11.52kWh/mo @ 16hrs = $0.92
---
$0.46

For a total savings of $3.06 $3.66/mo!

I suppose if you had more than 1 computer, it could add up. Not worth the trouble for me, though. I hate rebooting.

My bill was $29.xx last month, then this month I get it and it's $181.xx because my wife had the A/C on pretty much every day to keep cool in the 100+ degree weather we've been having.

Mine was about $320 last month...damn swimming pool pumps and inefficient AC/insulation!!!

heh my wife wants us to buy a pool. But then she freaks out over the electric bill as it is. I keep telling her pool pumps and heaters run it up a LOT.

You should seriously consider investing in some solar panels for your roof, maybe a small wind turbine for night, and a wood stove. 😕

Go to Walmart and buy those winter sealing plastic sheets. Put them on all but one or two windows (preferably on opposite sides of the house so you can put in a fan window when you don't need the AC). Leave them on all year - keeps heat in during winter, and heat out during summer.

Normally around $160/month?
I have all electric appliances and my bill doesn't exceed $90/month. And the air conditioning has been on for a couple months straight. How can you have a $160/month bill on average?

mine was 190 and 210 the last two months :/

PG&E in California has tiered rates. baseline(tier1) = 11.42 cents per kwh, tier2=12.989 cents, tier3 = 17.625 cents, and tier4 = 21.6 cents. Each tier has a percentage of usage over the baseline quantity that you are alotted. I think my bill this month is probably going to be around 175 bucks :|.

I will be doing that. and i will also be going to home depot and buying 4 ceiling fans to put in each room to help move the air around more.

Another problem is that the jackasses who built my home put the thermostat to the house in the kitchen directly opposite the stove. i wish i could slap the moron who did that. When i am at home depot getting the fans i will be buying 4wire thermostat wire and rewire my thermostat to the living room. major pain in the ass but it needs to be done.
