That's awesome. It's real hard to see in most of the video, that's probably due to compression and vid quality, but still, that controller must have some serious good vision.

That is totally cool! Thanks, OP! How do you steer that thing when you can't see it. The guy controlling it really knows what he's doing. Did you catch the landing? From 400mph to a gentle landing right at his feet....mad skillz. I know little about RC stuff, but I didn't think there were handheld remote controls w/that kind of range? I mean, that thing gets 2 miles out in a few seconds.

OK, I guess they don't have little fighter jets (afawk), but UAVs are the first thing that come to mind. Predator Drones and such. taking out terrorists on a daily basis in Pakistan.

I know about those. This thing is much smaller than those.

Its smaller size and smaller cost lend itself to being perfect for kamikaze missions where it is the payload its delivering

Ideally they should use the predator drones to drop these guys out of the bottom then they can go on individual missions. that would be badass. An unmanned plane that delivers smaller deadlier planes. muahahahahha

Noticed that it had to be catipulted.

Trying to take off normally would burn up to much runway and fuel.

yeah i know how are we comparing these two things?

General characteristics

* Crew: none on-board
* Length: 27 ft (8.22 m)
* Wingspan: 48.7 ft (14.8 m (dependent on block of aircraft))
* Height: 6.9 ft (2.1 m)
* Wing area: 123.3 sq ft[54] (11.5 m²)
* Empty weight: 1,130 lb[55] (512 kg)
* Loaded weight: 2,250 lb (1,020 kg)
* Max takeoff weight: 2,250 lb[55] (1,020 kg)
* Powerplant: 1× Rotax 914F turbocharged Four-cylinder engine, 115 hp[55] (86 kW)

Performance

* Maximum speed: 135 mph (117 knots, 217 km/h)

Ummm....they both fly unmanned. I know what you are saying though, but I thought I saw a show where recon units use small RC planes to get a birds eye view of what's ahead. I can't remember what it was about though. It maybe have been on Future Weapons.

How did this turn into a UAV discussion? An RC plane, weighing less than 15 pounds has no practicality as a UAV. The communcation system on the Predator likely weighs more than that little jet

I saw that on Future Weapons.

Edit - But I don't think it was a jet or plane though, more like a helicopter

sick.

I'd bet the guy flying the plane has been doing it for so long he can fly it in the air without seeing it.

he can probably anticipate anything it can do, how long it will take to do certain efforts, etc.

Wow... that's pretty crazy.

I, for one, would lose sight of that thing instantly. I have way too shitty of eyes for that.

It's also way too fast for it to really be that fun... I mean, it looks like he has to loop it around pretty fast otherwise it goes out of range.

Now if that thing had a camera on it and my controller had a screen on it... and it was REALLY fast at communicating that shit over distances of miles... Oh hell yes, gimmie. :awe:

Seeing his hand close to the engine reminds me of that Mythbusters episode when Adam got his face too close the the AC motor from a vacuum cleaner.

Link FAIL. (ftfy)

Wow. The engine is about $4k.

whoa... 245k rpm, wouldn't want to machine something like that. bet it would be good at cutting up fruit :p

pretty average in the RC jet community.
and just to educate those out there todays RC equipment can go further than you can see.
we are running 2.4ghz setups with 9 channels.

I fly large RC helis that do over 100mph+ easily the hobby has come a LONG way since 72mhz setups and propellers.

we have turbine helis now as well. and yes the turbines start at about 2.5k and go up from there.

there are some bad ass RC sites to check out.
see runryder.com for helis and rcuniverse for just about everything else.

I am so not getting that. I crash RC cars... what are my chances with planes? :p

How the f do they control that, that's insane how fast it gets out of camera distance

I wonder if two of those engines and a better wing could get it to the speed of sound? Sonic booms anyone?
