$4000 cell phone bill?

They also failed to mention that the bill was wiped clean (I'm sure it was).

I've messed up w/ Verizon and Cingular in the past using internet services and texting that I didn't sign up for.

Just took one call to tell them to change it to unlimited and they took care of it w/out the charges.

I bet your parents lived fine without computers, maybe you should sell your desktop

I could, and it wouldn't negatively affect me. Just like not having a cellphone won't negatively affect my kids. My parents didn't buy me a computer, I did that myself. Just like I won't be buying my kids a cellphone and plan. They can do that themselves when they're 18 and can legally sign the contract.

Billions of people before you lived without electricity/running water/cars too...you should get rid of those as well.

This story has been written so many times already. And this discussion has occured already. I declare this an OLD and USE SEARCH. All new stories based on a teen living through his/her cell phone should be added to an existing thread.

If you disagree, send a text to someone and complain about it.

the more important question is how old are your kids? I didn't get a cell phone until my senior year of high school.

cellphone != basic sanitation

There does not exist a world in which a cellphone is a necessity of life for a 14 year old child.

My parents always gave me their old hand-me-down computers when I was growing up. They were always about five years old by the time I got them (a Mac IIcx around 1995, a Mac Quadra in 1997, and a Power Mac 7100 in 1999), but it was useful for both doing homework and just having fun with games. Once I started making money on my own I was excited to be able to buy a modern one for myself.

My first child is due in November.

I got my first cell phone in 2005. My wife needed one for work and the plan we signed up for got me a free phone. I have used a free phone ever since. I could easily live without it. Even as an adult, cellphones are a(n expensive) luxury and not a necessity.

pfff. Local talk radio host here had their kid do 17k text messages. where is his news story?

Texting is the biggest bullshit ripoff ever created by phone companies. I upgraded my AT&T phone to unlimited, and proceeded to send 4,000 text messaged the next month. They slapped me with a $400 bill, claiming I only had 400 text messages per month. They had no record of me ever upgrading to unlimited, and I had lost the receipt I was given at the store.

I almost cancelled my cell after that, they offered no help whatsoever for the situation. I think when my contract expires, I'm going to stop using a cell altogether.

Having 10,000 texts in a month isn't as much as you'd think, that's sent AND received, so the kid probably only sent around 5,000. (Still a buttfuck ton, people were texting me constantly the entire month, and I felt obligated to reply, and I only reached 4,000)

my daughter regularly texts between 8,000 up to 10,000 x's month. Her record was approximately 15,000 IIRC.

Does she have an actual life? 🙂

this happened with verizon when i switched my daughter to unlimited too, they told me they had no record of the account change. they were able to go back in the web logs and see where i had accessed the account and made changes tho, and retroed the change, clearing that overcharged bill. my daughter has been known to text about 10k a month at times, especially during the summer. i used to pop a gasket about it, but started looking at the numbers on it. she was receiving 3 times more than she was sending. her friends were spamming forwards to everyone constantly, so it wasnt really as bad as i thought it was.

Actually, the girl sent 10,003 and received 9700'ish.

Last I heard my co-workers daughter was well on paced for total 30k text messages. He was smart, unlimited text messaging.

BREAKING NEWS VIDEO FROM CNN!

Teen sends 10,000 text messages!!!!!1!!1!!

EXACTLY my thought. who cares!? they're dumbasses...

read carefully, the issue was about a $4800.00 cell phone bill 😕

No video. Is this the article from a month or so ago?

I was sure to turn all of that stuff off as soon as I got my phone. $0.16ea Alltel. (This includes the text messages that Alltel sends out when your billing statement is ready!)

I got my first cellphone back in 1995, junior year in college. Not because I asked for it, but because my dad went to the US and got himself this supposedly new and cool Motorola brand USA cell phone that he wants to use more. It turns out this cool phone was using the system they called AMPS.

So I got myself a hands-me-down cell phone (only ~4 months old too) that my dad didn't want anymore. The cell phone I got was using this system they called GSM

/facepalm, but I didn't complain 🙂
