Hi there,

I'm just about to order the components for my new gaming rig, please take a quick look at them and tell me they're alright.

The only two things I'm not sure about yet is the motherboard, currently I've chosen the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z Z68 mb, as I plan to watercool and overclock it a little.
Is the Maximus IV Extreme-Z a good choice? I've heard that the NForce200 chip might slow my graphic cards down when using only 2-way-SLI (which is what I had in mind), is that true?

My second problem is the case: Is the CM HAF-X good for a watercooled system?
I don't need fancy looks, just something well built and with enough space for the cooling.

For that much money, spend just $1500 on the computer and invest the rest into a higher quality monitor set up and home theater system.
 
2 x EVGA GTX580's and 2 x MSI GTX580's.

2 questions... At what point do you think you will actually utilise this hardware and you do realise after the 2nd 580 you will be getting diminishing returns if you instal anymore.
 
Sorry for not making that clearer, it will be a 2-way-SLI, so either the two EVGAs or the two MSIs, depending on the design of the MSIs, if they can't be retrofitted with watercooling I'll take the EVGAs.

I already have a HP ZR30w, maybe I'll upgrade to 3 of them. So two GTX580s will probably not even suffice.

€: tell me how to power 3x30" monitors with 2 grand for at least 2 years to come?
 
I've considered that option, but scaling with 4 GPUs seems to be a problem with quite a number of games, that's why I went with 2 580s.
 
personally I would go for dual gigabyte gtx 580 SOC --- the MSI lightening's are great too. but went to the gigabyte SOC's -- these cards are phenomenal and a defnite upgrade from the pair of 5970's I had been using -- and yes quadfire still isn't great.


EDIT: would still take 6970 x 3 over 6990 quadfire -- almost did, but as as I noted above I went back to the green team after the major let down that the 5970 x 2 turned out to be.

I didnt know that xfire was bad with quads, I hear with 6xxx in general two and 3way scale pretty well

if you are WC's them, then you have lots of OC headroom, so that should extend the usefull life of the cards

Not really... With 2 30" monitors the dual 580 3GB cards are essential if he is going to want to crank up his AA in games. I can see that the 1000w PSU being overkill, but if he ever wanted to upgrade to triple SLI ect, it would come in handy. I am not really a fan of seagate, they seem to have gone down in quality over the years. Also if the SSD is just going to be used as a boot drive 64GB will be enough. But if you are going to have quite a few programs and maybe some games on it I can see how you would go with the 240GB.

The OP is not going that much overkill, I have had my share of overkill rigs and this rig is minor to a few I have done, so if he has the means to do it, and also means to upgrade in the future I am all for it. 😉

Meh... some people have the money for such obnoxious things. For most people it makes more sense to spend $2k and save the rest for upgrades. Depending on the income level this guy might be able to drop $4k a year if he needs to.
 
Alright, so No objections against the mainboard? Strangely I can't seem to find any review whatsoever of this particular model...
The coolermaster Haf X is not the most refined case i guess, but it should enough space for WC I assume. Does someone here use either of those, mb and case?
And if you're wondering why I'm spending such an ridiculous amount on that rig: the company I'm working for pays for it 🙂
As well as for future upgrades.

It depends on whether or not the MSI card is a reference design or not. If it isn't, I'd go with the eVGA that already have the block on it. You'd probably be spending just as much after buying the full coverage blocks anyways.

You could go with a universal block and just buy heatsinks for newer cards as you upgrade.
swiftech has the MCW82 and separate heatsinks so you can move the block from one card to the next.

Well I already double checked every piece of hardware, only the mainboard and the case is questionable. ASrock is supposed to be high quality as well, but Asus is still the best manufacturer it seems?

€: which is pretty clear in the original post I'd say.
