400 Watt PSU Enough to run a 7800GT?

I have a 400W PSU, and I am in the process of purchasing a 7800GT with a new SLI motherboard. Is 400 sufficient? Or should I purchase a new one just to be safe?

If so, could you link me to your recommendations? Try to keep the price under $50. If it is possible also, could you recommend me a case with a nice PSU?
 
420w is fine... im assuming u r not using SLI.. it's totally fine.. but my question is... is it sh!tty 420w or solid 420w?
 
I will only be using the 1 card. The reason why it is an SLI board is because it comes free so its pretty much a steal. Let me check the PSU..

Hmm.. I just checked the PSU and noticed it is only 400W.. It runs the 12v at 17A...
 
What brand ? what are the rail specs ? 400 watt crap, can be beat by a 300 watt Antec.

Well I mean I have no idea what an MGE case is, but as I just posted in another thread, I have an SFF Shuttle system at work with a 6600GT in it, and it has a 240W power supply, the system runs flawlessly... the 6600GT probably draws a similar amount to the 7800GT, as the power draws are quite low for the 7800GT surprisingly. a little Googling much help you find the info you need, but provided the PSU is decent quality, 400 is ample to say the least.
 
I doubt it's a good one, never heard of that case, and my 380 Antec barely runs my 6800GT.
 
maybe. depends on the maker, of course, like others have said.

some of my friends have 6800GT's or higher ATI or nvidia equivalents in their Dells. the power supplies they have are rated at 250W, but they are made by Fortron/Sparkle. they are handling them with ease.

i have a Sparkle 350W from almost three years ago and I keep on adding new parts and it handles them with ease.

as long as its a good quality psu, it should be fine. good psus always perform above what they are expected to do, that is how you judge a good quality psu.
 
never herd of MGE brand of PSUs...im sure an antec or any other quality brand can own it though...even with that system, a 350 antec will do.
 
ive seen mge brand psu's at frys and micro center. if it were me i would get a better psu. i would get fortron blue storm 500watt. gives you breathing room for future upgrades and is a nice psu. it is more then 50 bucks though. ive seen them between 70-80 bucks.

Also might look a little better and it has active PFC which means the voltage will probably be more stable. That forton doesnt haev PFC so it also might run hotter. Despite the 2nd 12v rail on the cooler master being lower, its rated differently. Cooler master rates on continous output, and not "max". Read reviews, i got my cooler master for 25 bucks AF and the voltages are better (higher and more stable) than an OCZ modstream 450.

like any OCZ power supply even comes close to a the $50 price point the OP suggested. basically you want him to spend twice or more his budget and buy a power supply which can be beaten by just as good or better power supplies at less than half the cost?

What can you get for $50 that's really good? a 430W TruePower 2.0? Lafff. 17A is not sufficient for a GPU + CPU. Trust me. You need at least 15 A per rail. That's why a Modstream 520 would work really well, or if you could geta Bluestorm or a TruePower 2.0 480W for a low price, that would be great.

Seriously. Don't cut on power supply. It's something that will last you a long time if you get a good one.

shamrock: I'm sorry, but you really need a good PSU for your 7800GT. You need solid rails and good voltage regulation. I personally have a 600W Seasonic to runa 3700+ @ 2.64 and a 7800GT. Dual rails, 18A per rail.
 
Yikes, the 17A on the 12v rail would make me a little bit nervous, especially since that brand PSU isn't the best. I would go with a cheap Antec.
 
Shamrock: Pls put rest of your system in a spec. As is Id say get a OCZ Powerstream 520. but thats expensive. Then a Fortron 550 True Blue is good at a decent price. You could probably get away w. a decent 480W PSU unless U have a DFI MoBo then that OCU PS becomes mandatory with exception if U want to go SLI because then U want a PCPnC 500+ or a OCZ Powerstream 600.

Is that a nF4 MoBo???
