$400 store credit at Sears...what tools should I buy?

Entity

Lifer
I just got a brand new router and worm drive circular saw (Porter Cable) for graduation. Now I'm returning a POS piece of exercise equipment that has broken many a time, and I'm going to be issued a $500 store credit at Sears. Kate and I are looking at buying a house in the near future; with that in mind (thinking that we'll have to do some home improvement work, of course), what tools would be the most useful?

I'm debating between a compressor + nailer, a router stand + a sander, or a few other things. What else should I consider?

Mmmm...$500 in tools. Woohoo!

BTW, Sears customer service rocks. 😀😀

I live in Seattle. You can't make very good money offering to blow the rain off people's sidewalks. 😉

You don't get snow in the winter ?

Do you have basic hand tools? Various wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc?

Yeah, I'm pretty much covered on those. I could use some more 1/4" drive stuff and a few 1/2" drive items, but nothing in that price range.

Nope.

Seattle rains 9mo out of the year, and is sunny for the other 3 (what we call summer).

Not usually. I live in Portland, not Seattle.. but it's about the same here. We probably even get less snow than Seattle since we're farther south. It sucks being sea-level.

Well since as I said before I don't know what you have...

Cordless drill
Planer
Mitre saw
Table saw.
Sander
Good work table.

Air compressor? Maybe. Be good for a paint gun etc, but frankly, a nailgun is something I would rent. Too many other tools I could use for a whole variety of projects, but if I need a nailgun, it is for a specific job for a limited time.

You already have a router I'm assuming? Get a router stand and sander. You don't need a nailgun unless you're doing bigger projects, but an air compressor can come in very handy. How about a circular saw, miter saw, or reciprocating saw?

Assuming that you don't need a new lawn mower, I'd probably spend the money on a set of cordless power tools. If you buy the cordless drill, saw, screwdriver, and sander all at once, you can make sure that they use all the same kind of replacement rechargeable battery pack. Trust me, it will save you money in the long run.

All good recommendations. Thanks so far, guys. 😀

I have:

Nice Router
Nice Circular Saw
Corded Dewalt Drill
Jig Saw
Various hand tools
Drill bit sets/countersinking sets

What I'm thinking so far:

Router Table (#1)
Sander
Work Table/Bench/Toolbox combo
Shop Vac

That should take care of the $500 and help me along with some of the work I'll be doing.

thanks again for the recs 🙂

Why is that? For me the 'professional' handles fit much better in my hand. I did wear my #2 phillips out and twisted two standard blades but all were replaced free.

It seems the original poster has his tool list figured out, but for other's thinking about tools:

If I had a $400 credit and lacked most hand tools, I would get one of their tool sets, they are the most bang for the buck.

Compressor + nailer would be a waste, how much nailing are you going to be doing that you'd want to drag in a compressor and nailer. If you woodwork alot a router stand is worthwhile, same with a sander, otherwise hand sanding and using a router without a stand is just as good. You also need to think of where you will put your tools when not in use.

I have a ton of tools and use them all pretty regularly between helping others with home/car projects and my own jobs. I would say the power tools I use the most in order are my drill, dremel, circular saw, table saw, bench grinder, router, orbital sander, belt sander.

Around the house you are going to be using hammer and nail (hanging stuff mostly), #2 phillips and a 1/4" standard both about 4-5" would be best, standard socket set and combo wrenches (1/4"-5/8" would cover most jobs household), standard hex keys, utility knife, level, miter box and back saw, a medium sized adjustable wrench that can cover up to 7/8"), good flashlight, and a box to stick all of it in and allow you room to grow.

Sears # 46564 is a 213 piece mechanics set that includes a good mix of standard/metric sockets, and a tool box I think...value of set is $685.78...............$199.99 (great deal)
Sears also has a 140 piece all standard and 140 piece all metric (#'s 33141 / 33941) each worth over $600 for $199.99 each
I think 33426 looks like a great deal, 336 pieces worth over $1200 for only $399.

tons of other great deals, take a look at what's included and see what you think you'll use and what you won't...then buy the best value...you should be able to get a nice home set and add in a drill/hammer/saw/tool box and still be around $400.

The best bang for buck comes with buying a 'set' and then you can supplement with ebay or the store. Ebay is a great place to pick up craftsman tools and if you don't like the condition, you can return them for a free replacement at any sears (hand tools that is)

Make a list of the tools that you want and then wait for sales - July 4, Labor Day, etc.

Yeah, I'm gonna wait until the next Craftsman club sale for it. Should be soon, I hope. 😀

Miter box is nice if you're doing woodworking.

Ooooh, get an oxy-acetylene torch. Rusted bolts are your bi-otch.
