Hi,

I've got a 40" Sony Bravia LCD TV I use for my computer monitor and I'm looking to find out how much VGA power I need to run my games at really high resolutions and with good frame rates.

I really don't want to go SLI if I can keep from it because of the cost. I've got my new eVGA 8800GT Super Clock on the way ..will it be enough?

My old 7950GT KO still does pretty well given the screen size and it's really surprising becuase some say you have to have SLI with such a large monitor. I could hold my own in BF2.

So I'm a little bit confused as my experience contradicts what some hardware reviewers say.

What advise can you all give me on this?

If I have to SLI I will but I'd probably go the Phenom route to save money.

What I'm asking is....will a single 8800GT run a 40" LCD monitor smoothly with good framerates and high resolution?

Nobody makes a 40" monitor. Dell's 30" monitors run @ 2560x1600 resolution, and are almost impossible to game with, unless you're playing an older game, or have an 8800 Ultra, and don't use any AA. So, how well you'll be able to game on your 40" TV, which either has 1280x720 resolution or 1920x1080, will all depend on how high you crank up your in-game settings and how much AA you use. That's if it's a 1080P model, if it's only the 720P model, you didn't need an 8800GT, unless you game with all ultra high settings & 16xQ AA.

Its a Sony Bravia 1080p. You know oeften there's no need to max those in game settings as the benefits aren't very visable so I hardly ever do and just tune it to what looks nice. So if i see little to no change in IQ I'll leave a setting there... I do like to game at 1920x1080 when it will run on the current 7950GT KO. So you think that 8800GT OC will handle this Sony well? The reason I am pleading for good advice is that I'm thinking of getting a new mainboard, if the performance is worthwhile, and need to know if I *should* invest in SLI. My preference is not to.

40" is quite large.

I've got a lift top coffee table in the game room and run the PC from the couch. Pretty lazy. -lol

I can't put my order through Newegg yet until I'm sure I want/need a non SLI board. I was thinking of getting the ABIT IP35 Pro but there's the issue of no SLI ..which I may or may not need ..and I do mean need because I do NOT want it.

Buying time can go from exciting to aggrivating very quick. Get me in an NVIDIA warehouse with special liberties and give me an hour with a bat in my hands....

You can't have a 40" tv-monitor on your computer desk. Bad idea. Viewing distance is important or you get serious eye strain. A comfortable couch, unlike mine, is also important.

First of all, size doesn't matter, pixels matter.
You could have a 50" projector with a 1024x768 resolution...and guess what? Your video card is going to push just as many FPS as if you had a 14" monitor running the same resolution.

More pixels to push = faster card needed to maintain framerates.

Most TVs will have a scaling option, though, so you can always run at a lower, compatible resolution and have the TV scale up the image to fill the screen if your video card can't handle 1080P, which is a pretty high resolution.

Pushing a 720P resolution shouldn't be too hard for any 8800-class video card, and it should look nice on the TV. Many games you could run at a 1080P resolution, but something like Crysis would need SLI 8800-Ultras or something obscene like that ;)

I have the same tv (I think) I have a 40 inch (crt) Sony ,but mines only 1080i with the dvi input. They didn't have 1080p in 2003 on crt tv's. It should run any game fine with a 8800 series card . You won't need sli.

edit : sorry i missed the Lcd part

just look at video card reviews that run benchmarks at 1920x1080 or somewhere in that area. that will give you an idea of how it will perform. also take into account the system they benchmarked it on and how your system stacks up.
