40% off Criterion Collection releases!

So for you movie buffs and DVD collectors out there, this type of sale doesn't come along very often. The prices aren't GREAT, but are at least a few bucks cheaper, if not more, than the next seller. So many classic titles, I don't know where to start. :(

 Nice prices on some great movies. These rarely go on sale, so this is definitely a good deal.

EDIT: Tempted by this Kurosawa set ...

That was one of the sets that I've been wanting for some time now...I have Hidden Fortress and SS already, but it wouldn't be hard to unload them.

Actually people have been saying that they jack up the prices whenever they have these sales. So you still getting a discount but not as much as you might think. They tend to bump up the prices a bit.

Who is "they"? Criterion? They're a small, independent distributor, so their retail presence is limited at best and their DVDs often list for full MSRP.

DDD is one of the sites that have good prices on certain Dvds. But when they have sales like these they bump up prices. Do I actually care if they are small, big, large or if your ego got bruised?

From my brief glance I saw some great Hitchcock films, but I'd rather buy those together in a box set.

There WAS a Hitchcock box set, but it is now out of print...and doubtfully will return. Fetches about $200 or more on eBay.

As far as I know, the list prices that DDD shows for Criterion films does not change when they do these sales. You can check dvdpricesearch and see for yourself whether these prices make sense to you. I have bought a number of Criterion discs from DDD because they were the cheapest prices I could find.

Sometimes Borders will show a lower list price than MSRP, which makes them cheap when they offer a good coupon discount. For example, the Zatoichi series has a $20 MSRP at other shops, but Borders shows them at $15.

Thanks OP for bringing this to my attention.

The Hitchcocks are totally worth the price and highly recommended; they have done remarkable restoration work on films like "The Lady Vanishes" and "The 39 Steps." You've never "seen" these films until you've watched them like this. Also, all of the silent films are excellent, as are foreign classics like "Diary of a Country Priest," "Au Revoir Les Enfants," "The Virgin Spring", any of the Japanese classics and Michael Redgrave's "The Browning Version." Hey, I'm a film historian by profession so really have watched most of these in 16mm or 35mm, and then on video/DVD. And Criterion wins hands down for the best possible quality.

Keep in mind its what, two weeks til HD DVD comes out.

OTOH the criterion LD release is still the best ever for many titles.

The link takes me to a mother's day sale. Not quite the movies I was looking for. Guess the sale is over?
