If it turns out I can use the Alpha 8045 heatsink in my motherboard I would like to use a fan in the low 30's in DBA for noise.
I have found several fans that have ratings of 34 DBA or under with just slightly under 40CFM.
Will this be enough for the 8045?
If I cannot use the 8045, but can use the Swiftech will this be enough for that?
If not in either case what would be a good CFM rating to use for good cooling while being able to keep my sanity.

AMD XP 1700+ CPU
Soltek 266a motherboard, arriving tomorrow

Thanks,
Mark

First of all, make sure that the PAL8045 is compatible with your board...there's a URL to a list of compatible boards somewhere on this forum...

If you're looking for a good fan with a quiet CFM/DBa ratio, try the Panaflo rated at 40 CFM/32.1 DBa. This is a perfectly good fan to use with this kickass heatsink. Oh yeah...and don't forget to set it to suck - i.e. pull air OFF off the heatsink, not blow into it - that's how it was designed.

Here is a possibility, newegg has them. I run mine exhausting at the middle setting with an 8045 and get around 48c load on a 1.4. Cranking it up to full will drop it another 1-2C. I have found that the ability to set the fan to balance the noise and cooling is a big plus.

"Featuring the ability to adjust the fan's speed through this easy to use control knob (shown to the left), the Enermax Adjustable Speed 80mm is a great choice for mid-range cooling needs. You determine it's performance! "

2000 RPM with 25.4 CFM @ 21 dBA
2500 RPM with 32.37 CFM @ 27.3 dBA
3000 RPM with 39.8 CFM @ 32.6 dBA

newegg $8

I've got 2 PAL8045's on 2 XP1700+'s on 2 Abit KG7s. Coupled with an Antec SX1030 with 4 80mm fans and a Sunon 40cfm fan on each PAL8045, I get near room temps.
