40.72 NVidia drivers = poor performance

After installing the latest drivers from Nvidia (version 40.72, 09/27/2002) for Windows 2000 I noticed that Q3 seemed a little slower. I ran 3DMark and I was shocked to see my score had gone down 900 points! :Q

Is anyone else experiencing poor performance with these drivers? Where can I get an older copy that works well? This is really frustrating. :frown:

Not only that but it likes to lock up my computer everytime I go to display settings 🙁 Harray for old drivers 🙂

Oh well, as long as I don't crash in ut2003, I'm good.

=)
that is comPLETELY screwed... my 3dmark2k1 score went up over 600 points jumping from 30.82 to 40.72 drivers.. i LOVE the 40.xx drivers!

Performance went up for me, about 1000 points in 3d-Mark 2001SE. And they're stable and let me run all progs unlike the 40.41s so I'm pretty satisfied with them. On a sidenote the 40.72s perform about the same for me as the 40.41s but they're stable.
Did the nechmarks go down right after installing them or did it take some time? I know it sounds weird but the 40.41s performed great for me the first week then everything went down (went from 220fps @ 1024x768 hq in Q3A to 169) without installing any new progs or such, maybe the same happened to you with the 40.72s.

You can still get the 30.38s from nVidias site, the last time I checked they were there under official driver releases. Else do a search for them on Google, many many sites have various nVidia-drivers.

I have a PnY GF4 ti 4200 w/ 64 megs ddrsdram and i installed those drivers and the games that had about 80 fps were now getting 45 fps. So i decided to uninstall the driver and keep the default.. and went back to 80 fps +.. so ya bad drivers. I am running a amd 800 with winows 98se

For those that miss my thread in Video forum ,have a look here ,lots of benchmarks, image quality etc and quite a lot of detonator drivers in the roundup.

🙂

I went from 40.41beta to these official drivers, the beta drivers that supposedly gave out inflated scores, but as deeko would say, 3dmark blows so who cares

right?

Aren't the 40.xx drivers optimized for GF4's? I think in the release notes, the optimizations listed all relate to the GF4's. If you are using a GF3 or below, I'm thinking you may want to stick with 30.82. Pretty sure in another thread GF3 users were complaining about drops after switching to 40.xx drivers.

Could very well be, the strange thing is that I got a performance decrease after a while with 40.41 even though I have a Ti4200. 40.72 performs way better than 30.82 though.

mine doesn't lock up but it does crash display settings. yay for old drivers. 😉

Works fine here, although performance seems o have dropped a bit. But those drivers allow you to override the refresh rate in DirectX and OpenGL (to have more than 60 Hz), so they are worth it

Forgive me if this is somewhat of a sidestreet (thread hijack?).

Yesterday I sent a Sony VAIO Digital Studio system back to Sony for "repairs" after it started emitting a strange, moderately loud, high-pitched shrieking sound on 11/17/2002. Prior to this point the system had been remarkably quiet, especially considering how fast it was and how many fans were in the system. The sound was NOT coming from the case fan or CPU fan, AFAICT, because it didn't vary in pitch when the system was first started. Likewise, it wasn't from the HD. It appeared to be coming from the video subsystem, but the internal structure of the PC didn't lend itself to easy investigation. Besides, it's under warranty. This is a system I use for simple video editing, so the noise was a considerable distraction, and it caused both my wife and myself to have headaches! Into the shop it went.

Why am I telling you all of this crap? I keep records of what / when I install on my systems, and those records get backed up to CD every day. I just looked in the Windows XP update records for that Digital Studio system. I installed the 40.72 drivers from the MS Windows Update Site on 11/17/2002. Doh! I must not have noticed the noise immediately because the wife was watching TV. (System is kept in the living room.) But on the next boot after the update we both noticed the noise!

Could most certainly be a coincidence, but it has me wondering now... Performance after the update seemed to be just fine, the only obvious performance-related change after installation being stuttering of the silly Windows startup sound when the system was booted. Don't know if the drivers could cause the video card to emit this shrieking sound or not. And, oh yes, I did turn off the speakers during testing, so I know that it wasn't any kind of crosstalk or feedback issue with audio on the system.

Anyone ACTUALLY remember to uninstall the old drivers first? It has turned out to be the main problem in most people's cases....

I made the same mistake once with Det2 drivers with ma ol' TNT2.

go to Guru 3D and find the 41.03 drivers. I updated my computer last nigt with them and saw a big performance jump over the 40.72 drivers that I was running

40.72s gave me a fit, too and this was on a fresh XP install. The problems weren't just in 3D games either; I have an SNES emulator on here that I like to play, and it works great under 30.xx and earlier drivers. But when I tried to use the newest drivers, the screen was really jerky and would occasionally just flash - as though it had dropped a bunch of frames. in a 2-D game:Q. Well, back to the 30.xx drivers for me. I want my Mario Kart!😀. I am using a GF3, so maybe the earlier poster was right in that the 40.72 drivers were meant mostly for the newer cards.

The 40.72's did the following for me in WinXP:
On one system, they didn't do too much of anything, except render some tweaking utilities useless (they were updated later) and really introduce nothing new. My preset settings for Counterstrike didn't work either, and it didn't seem to perform as well. Back to the 30.82's.
The other system - it would show the Windows logo during bootup, then go to a blank screen and lock right there. After struggling with it for awhile - safe mode and the Previous Good config boot option - I used the system restore feature somewhere, and that got it working. I'm staying away from the 40.xx's until I hear considerably fewer stories about crashes, or serious problems like this.

Just to add to my earlier comment about 40.xx intended for GF4 and not so much for GF3, I do remember that I tried the 40.71 beta with my GF3 (about a month and a half ago b4 my GF4), and got all kinds of strange artifacts and tearing in games and 3dmark2k1, so I went back to 30.82. I've also noticed in the past that when you update a driver, you should undo any card OC's prior to installation of the new driver. The reasoning is that each driver claims increased "performance" of XX%, which is done through optimizations. This tends to stress the chip more if it is OC'd at all, making your previously fine OC unstable.

Another key indicator that your card/system isn't liking new drivers is fuzzy/distorted textures in games and benches. It can be very subtle and since you don't have an immediate frame of reference in front of you, it is easily overlooked. I know I have in the past. I tend to try the newest out, but if I noticed anything funky, I revert to the last known good driver. The only time I would justify keeping the latest driver in if I knew it had issues is if it was absolutely necessary in running a game I was currently playing. Stick with what is stable, 600 points in 3dmark2k1 isn't worth keeping the latest driver in your system if it is buggy.

He recommended the 40.72 or 29.60 drivers for overall.

I'll stick with my 40.72...
i have zero problems at all with these drivers!

i haven't had any problems with the new drivers. my fps in CS went down from 100 to ~80 but it's impossible to tell the difference so who cares...

Did anyone try the latest 41.09 drivers? How do they compare?

Also, I've never uninstalled any reference drivers before installing the new ones....just double-clicked and off it went. Haven't had any problems yet.
