Bullsh!t. Parents should be charged for the crimes of thier minor children, nomatter if it involves guns, or not. parents should also be charged with neglegencein the injury of their children if they did not take reasonable steps to protect them.
In this case, the parents left a second grader in charge of a 4 and 5 year old. That, my friend, no matter what happened, is neglegence. Since it resulted in the death of a child, it is negelgent homocide.

Some people should'nt be allowed to talk. But your freedom to be a nanny, eliteist, do-gooder *is* protected daily ... by the very Constitution you'd willingly shred for an "ounce of security". No thanks. I think everyone should have a gun. But certainly no one should be resricted from having them as it's a civil liberty granted by the const and unaliable right to defend yourself.

The trick is: How do you determine who is "responsible enough?" You cannot. So you create a set of laws punishing irresponsibility and follow through with them. Pair that with extensive education campaigns, and you've done all you can without violating the freedoms of everyone else.

Ah but you are forgetting... im conforming to stupidity.... you saying BANG BANG!!! which is NOT contributing anything closely worthwile to this thread at all are showing us your own TRUE stupidity.... If you want to relate our stupidity towards guns (which makes a WHOLE helluva lotta sense by the way) id be the guy who shoots cans for no reason on a saturday night, you would be the guy who shot himself in the head while cleaning out the gun because you left a bullet in the chamber....

At any rate, you cannot require a test for someone to enjoy their Constitutional rights.

I had a gun pulled on me a few times. Once was because I unknowingly startled a business owner that had been robbed one too many times. He was trained though and, seeing that I was not a threat, quickly lowered his weapon. The other time was by a maniac who probably had no qualms about killing anyone. But after both incidents I still strongly believe in an individual's right to bear arms.
My daughter's father is a hunter. He has guns and my daughter knows about them and is even going to be trained how to use them and what gun safety is all about. That will only be under strict supervision from him or her uncles or grandfather. At all times, his weapons are locked up tightly in a place that can not be accessed by her.
Personally, as a victim of a violent crime(since the defense issue is a big one), I don't think that having a gun around is a bad idea for people that know how to use them. I would be worthless with one because I'm not trained and a perp could easily get the gun away from me and use it against me instead.
As for using a knife or a baseball bat...it's a good idea, but I just wouldn't want someone to get that close to me for me to be effective with those particular weapons. Apparently the parents in that case were not trained on gun safety OR they chose to ignore it. They paid the price and that's tragic. But not all gun owners should be punished for one couple's stupidity.

I believe that if a burglar is willing to break into someones house, he would be willing to do anything to get what he's there for. You talk about a burglar breaking into a home and threatening the homeowner? Well, the burglar breaking in IS a threat, whether he knows you're there or not. You don't know what they are there to do, do you? I tell you what? You come and break into my home and we'll see what happens. I'm happy to have my guns. And yes, I've got 2 children in my home. And yes, I have the right, brought forth by my fore fathers, to defend my life, my home, my property, and my children and I would proudly do it if I ever had to. Someone in an earlier post said it best, if we lay down when confronted by burglars, which is what you are asking us to do, it would be a hayday for burglars all around. What would prevent them from doing this crime all the time if they know there's not threat in doing so? IDIOT!!!!!!!!!
