SLI is lame.

Hmmmm.... You're wrong about that. SLI isn't lame, but it is expensive.

If you decide to go SLI you pay double the price to get 150 % performance
while you can easily get a high end card right now,use it for a year and then
get a whole new card that destroys the original SLI setup.

Or if you have a buttload of money you can get the SLI setup and when it gets outdated get new cards and have them in SLI because you can afford it. SLI is aimed at the rich enthusiast and I for one think its awesome.

The 7800GTX's sold out at a price of $750 each. I read dozens of posts about people running out to buy 2 of them as fast as they could spend their money.

There seems to be an untapped market for uber high end video cards.

Um... except that if you buy two high-end cards, then for that year, you had something 50% faster than any single card. And then you could go out and buy two of the new next-gen cards and SLI them. Cost-effective? No (although right now, 2x 7800GT SLI is cheaper than and faster than 1x7800GTX"Ultra" 512MB). The way to go for maximum performance? Yes.

The *only* place it makes any sense (IMO) is at the super-high-end. No multi-GPU setup has realistically been a good upgrade path yet compared with buying a faster single card once the next hardware generation is out.
