4 UK men jailed for toy-car terror plot

LONDON (AP) — The terror plot involved targeting British reserve troops using a toy-car packed with explosives.

But investigators said Thursday Britain's domestic spy agency of MI5 and police were able to stop Zahid Iqbal, Mohammed Sharfaraz Ahmed, Umar Arshad and Syed Farhan Hussain before they could launch the deadly attack.

Iqbal and Ahmed were given extended sentences of 16 years and 3 months, which means they will be in jail for more than 11 years and put on parole for the rest of the time. Arshad was sentenced to more than six years in jail, while Hussain received more than five years.

The British men — aged between 22 and 31 — pleaded guilty in March to engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism.

And they received fairly light sentences too, which is surprising. The longest sentence was 16 years, the shortest 5 years; they will also be getting out early most likely.. The British justice system is taking quite a risk of not giving them much longer sentences, as they are all young men and will still be relatively young upon their release.

Even though their plot failed and a life sentence isn't warranted, their sentence should be long enough so that they are all grey bearded and feeble by the time they come out of jail..

If you are engaging in a plot to murder people and the police manage to stop you ahead of time why should the fact that the police stopped you ahead of time get you a lighter sentence?

Receiving a life sentence is a very heavy penalty, something which I think should be reserved for the very worst and most violent offenders; convicted murderers, pedophiles, hardened unrepentant terrorists etcetera...

A life sentence for potential, rather than demonstrated violence is excessive to me.

If I had it my way, I would have given them a max of 40 years, with the lightest sentence being 30....no chance for parole. That way, they'd be old, grey and hopefully subdued when released.

I'd agree with you if they had actually had a change of heart and decided not to go through with it... but they didn't. They didn't get the chance to kill innocent people because police stopped them. I don't think any penalty is too heavy for them. If it was up to me they'd be taken out back and put down.

A 22 years old guy who is out in 11 years will still be dangerous and have contacts. 40 years with restricted external comunication would be better.
