I joined. Now... I get all sorts of fame and money if my computer's the one that actually finds intelligent life out there, right?? BTW, what exactly is my computer doing with whatever data it is that it's doing something to? I was too tired to really search for a link to what exactly is going on.. anyone??

GasPath are you installing the CLI and Setidriver or using the GUI?

DrPizza, your computer is looking at a packet of information that is a snap-shot of time from space and seeing if any unusual patterns are there.

Drop by the DC forum and post any questions you may have.

Thanks for joining!

My new quiet Maxtor drive came in, so I have signed up. Using the GUI version, how long should a WU take on my computer?

Finally installed and joined successfully! :)

My question is, do I still get the cool-looking screen saver that shows my computer processing the SETI data? I joined using the preferred method, using the CLI instead of GUI.

Go TeamAnandtech!

It was taking up to 9 hours on my 933MHz P3 with 512 CAS 3 FSB133on the GUI, when I went to the CLI and use SETIdriver and SETIspy I was up to one WU every 5.2 hours( until the motherboard took a dump on me). My AMD 1700+XP with 512DDR FSB 133 with the same SETI setup runs a WU every 3.3 hours. While on my old P2 400 with 256 PC100 on FSB 100 only comes up with a WU every 10.5 hours.

Go with the CLI it is not as cool as the GUI, but results count.

explrsport I would think your system would do around 4 or 5 work units a day if you ran the CLI and not the GUI. Since you are running the GUI figure around half!

The preferred method gives doesn't include the screen saver. This CLI version can do two work units in the time the screen saver version does one.

Thanks ICXRa, I pretty much figured that out. I was just curious at a more technical level (math guy here) of what algorithms were being used, what exactly was the data, and such. I'll ask over at the DC forum.

Ok, you've convinced me to join. I didn't previosly because I only had a P2 266Mhz laptop and I didn't want to run SETI on that. But as of this past Thursday, I'm now the proud father of a brand new "Hot Deals" rig. This thing was built using mainly parts I found out about through the AnandTech Hot Deals forum and I feel like I owe all you guys something so here I am. You can see the specifics of my system from my "my system rig" page here and in my sig, but in short, it is an Athlon 1.4 GHz with 512MB PC133 ram. I hope my computer is a real champ with this SETI stuff :) I guess it will also be like a "burning in test" since it runs the processor at 100%.

Goodnight bump! :)

Long day at work....and another weeks worth coming up...so to all of you I say "Thanks" and a huge welcome to all of those who have joined. TeAm AnandTech is making moves in both production and members like I've never seen....and the top #10 is in sight now.....but DSLR looms behind...waiting to strike. To get to #10 and move up from there...we need as many members as we could hold ....so I invite the rest of you to join!

Thanks all...and goodnight! :)

You can make a big difference in pushing TeAm Anandtech forward in the race Vs. DSLR!
The seti@home client runs in the background and takes advantage of times while your computer is not being used to process Work Units.
Give it a try!
