I was researching the other firewalls to compare to the one for 18$ with no box sold bare and I think without a warranty some people are saying, and really liked all the reviews I could find on this one. A few complained the other deal didn't have support or updates available anymore so I also wondered what was out there that was new.

The throughput on this in the review seemed to peak around 6.7. Some people complain the soho clone in the other thread cut off around 1.6-7?
Opinions?

I wonder how the firewall in each unit stacks up against the other for protection?

multi-functional broadband router combines a 4-port 10/100Mbps dual-speed switch, a built-in print server, an RS232 COM port for fail-over dial-up or modem connections, an Internet firewall for security against hackers and other unauthorized users, and simultaneous Internet access for up to 253 users.

Features:

4-port 10/100Mbps switch
56Kbps external modem port
4 auto-MDIX/MDI ports
Built-in firewall
Built-in print server
VPN support
Web-based configuration

I hear more and more about friends having their systems hacked badly that have always on connections, such as DSL or a cable modem. Even those with good software firewalls like ZoneAlarm.

It seems to have won quite a few awards. I have seen a 5$ off 50$ coupon if you can find it.

Zonelabs has zonealarm, an excellent free software firewall, though I don't think any software firewall could even be anywhere near as good as ANY hardware version.

Its a quick easy down and set up is not awful, I recommend it for people as my first choice for people who don't want to or need a physical firewall appliance.

I got this for $50 (after $50 rebate) at microcenter atleast a year ago. Nice router. $69 is an ok deal. A quick check at newegg, its $75.

I would still rather have the $18 dollar Webramp LotusNotesGuy. The Webramp does SPI where as none of the low end routers/firewalls will. And the speed hit is very minimal. I am on Optimum Online one of the fastest, if not the fastest, cable companies in the US and there was no change in my actual download speeds. I still can dl files at over 600 kb/s which is what my dlink allowed me to do. Pick up the $18 router and a cheap switch(so you have 100Mbit on your lan) for less than this unit's cost after rebate. This is not meant to be a thread crap, since it seems that Lotus is sort of on the fence with this one.
