NOW - here is one question to current SC420 owners: does the sc420 have an onboard RAID controller?

but i think it does have onboard SATA RAID.

it has an 8x PCIe, which one guy modded to accept a 6600 (just cut a little plastic thing in the slot)

Just ordered one of the 2650's but upgraded the drives to a total of 5 -36gb 15krpm and the memory to 2gb, and cpu's to 3.06-1mb. Should be a nice Oracle 10g sandbox.

Is that all it takes to change an 8x slot into a 16x slot? If so, why do they bother with 8x slots?

With AGP 1.0 and 1.5, the voltages were different for the AGP bus. I wonder if that's the same for 8x and 16x PCIe. If so, his card may work for a little bit, but it's gonna crap out sooner or later.

it's still an 8x slot, it's just that the 6600 was designed to work at either 16x or 8x. the only mechanical difference beteween the slots is, apparently, that tab. remove the tab, a 16x card can fit into the 8x slot, and the chip senses that it is in an 8x slot and works accordingly.

Thanks OP for the post! For those who posted the last-weeks-deal-was-better-than-this comments, that was then, this is now. If we could all go back in time and get the previous deal, we would.

upgrading to an 80 gig drive is only $10 dont want to pass that up, if you jump on this one.
It has onboard SATA raid BTW for those who need it.

the dell 8x slot isnt a true 8x pci slot, its a 16x slot with a plastic insert added.
so only a 8x will fit. additionally even if you remove the plastic slot... the "new" "16x slot" will not have electrical contacts the full length of it. (in the 16x area.)

Crude drawing below to help explain
<--normal 16x PCIe would be this big, no slots----->
<--Dells looks like this but with a slot added-------->

Dell added slot

Some if not all 16x pciE cards will run at 8x.

|EDITED to make it "image" to appear normal

I think I'm going to wait for the next gen of PE SC servers to come out. I don't want to jump on the PCI-E bandwagon until they stablize a little more. The deals in Dell Small Business cycle at the end of every quarter....so there will be new deals in 3 months.
