4 Killed as Pickup Trucks Crash on I-69
ANGOLA - Investigators are still trying to determine what led to a head-on collision on Interstate 69, Saturday evening that left four people dead, the Steuben County Sheriff's Department Said.
Micheal L. Walter, 39, of Angola, was driving a green 1998 Chevrolet pickup north on I-69 just after 6:00 P.M. Saturday, when he crosssed the median and hit a black 1998 Chevrolet pickup head-on near the 150-Mile marker, Police said.
The driver of the southbound truck, Yolanda C. Alejo, 44, of Fort Wayne, and both of her passangers, Daniel Alejo, 43, and Cerda Z. Apolonia, 73, both also of Fort Wayne, died at the scene. Walter also died at the Scene.
Both drivers died of multiple blunt force trauma, said Steuben County Coroner Barb Julian. Autopsies on the drivers were completed Sunday morning.
The initial resulds of Walter's Autpsy did not reveal what caused him to cross the median, she said. It was not clear Sunday whether Walter had a medican condition that could have contributed to the crash, she said. Results of toxicolgy tests will be returned in about two weeks.
It was not clear late Sunday whereter speed was a factor in the accident. Attempts to reach investiagtion officers were not successful Sunday night.
The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, an Indiana conservation officer, Steuben County EMS, Angola Fire Department, and Indiana Department of Transportation were called to assist at the scene.
