4 ide connectors

I have 4 IDE connectors on my new Soyo.1,and 3 are primary,2,4 are secondary.3,4 are for RAID,but can be used as regular IDE.I'm not sure of the difference between primary,and secondary.I was curious as to the difference in hooking a cd-rom,and burner to one connector on the mb,(via a 3 connector cable)as compared to splitting them up......Thanks in advance,...

Welcome back. It is best if you hook up seperate devices to seperate IDE channels. It is easier for the data to flow without obstruction. Hook up you hard drive to the main primary channel and then hook up your CD ROM to the second primary connector. Hook up the burner to the second secondary channel. If I haven't confused you to death everything will run at it's best. Also, make sure both CD and CD-RW are jumpered to master and not slave or cable select.

Somebody told me using the raid connectors might cause problems,so I thought I'd ask here.Believe it or not,I used to be a small system builder back in the 386/486 days.I suffered a bad case of burnout,and wouldn't even repair a pc for a few years.I'll spend the next year catching up...........By the time I get the bugs out,I might even get a most frequent poster award.........lol

For some reason,the burner is not being recognized.The bios display shows the following:
primary master,primary slave,secondary master,secondary slave.In actuality,I could hook up 8 devices(2 on each connector)I am not sure how this correlates to the bios display.Im not sure the bios would actually show 8 devices?.Something else is odd too,with the jumper removed from my cdrom,it shows as slave.Used to be that no jumper indicated single drive.I'll do a little more troubleshooting......The mb manual says ide 3,4 work as normal,unless configured for RAID......

Check page 164 of your Soyo Dragon Manual:

ATAPI is the ATA/IDE extension for CD-Roms and such.
So, I was wrong, you apparently cannot have CDs and DVDs on your IDE 3,4

Booting from HDs on IDE 3,4 should be possible nontheless, though.
