4 gigs of ram issue?

So I made a computer for my friend of mine. He wanted a ton of ram so I decided to go with 4 OCZ 1 gig sticks of DDR2 800 Mhz. I have Core 2 duo E6750 with an intel motherboard:

At first I had all sticks of ram in and I was having a lot of trouble installing windows xp pro, it wouldn't finish installing. Then I went to 2 gigs, I got further in the installation but it did not complete. Then I went to 1 gig and it finished installing. Also I would sometimes have to reboot twice because nothing would show on the monitor. I'm using the onboard video card with the motherboard.

I got the computer all set up and was installing updates via wireless internet. my friend took his comp and hooked it up directly to his cable modem and it did not connect. Then all of a sudden he got a blue screen error. I will post the pic below. Keep in mind that this is with all sticks of ram in. I'm not sure what the problem here is though, if it's the ram or something else. also the computer will not boot up.

Definitely sounds like one of more of the ram modules are bad.

Run them all, one at a time. Have the bad one(s) rma'd.

Hello,

What is the part number of the OCZ modules?

Does that motherboard allow the adjustment of the ram voltage?

Also you know that xp pro will not use all 4 gigs of RAM I hope.

The applications running on XP Pro might though. Of course there is the 3.5GB RAM thing but that's no big deal.

I don't have the computer with me but i will check about changing the ram voltage. what will changing the voltage do?
The ram modules are rated at 2.1V: http://www.ocztechnology.com/p...pc2_6400_gold_quad_kit

The board defaults to 1.8V for DDR2, this may explain the reason you are unstable. If the board cannot raise the ram voltage above 1.8V, then 4GB of this ram, may not work at 800 MHz in this motherboard.

10 to 1 ryderOCZ is correct, I have seen issues before with memory that requires higher then stock voltage to work causing errors when a board is set to stock. Have him up the ram voltage to 2.1 and the problems should go away.

Some Intel motherboards, such as the DP965LT, will not let you adjust the RAM voltage. This is an unfortunate oversight. The only solution in that case is to lower the speed of the RAM to 676MHz in the BIOS. I had to do this with 2GB of g.Skill DDR2 PC6400. It was the only way I could get Windows to be stable. I've since replaced the motherboard with something more tweaker friendly and have been much happier.

If he's not overclocking the FSB, the RAM is going to run at DDR2-533 speeds anyway, balane.
The board will have an upclock divider to run the ram at 667 or 800, it doesn't run 1:1 automatically anymore, unless the board does not support the higher values.

This one does however.

Why all this nonsense? XP Pro and Vista can only access 3 GB of RAM unless you install the 64 bit version.

course its wouldnt stop an install, its just wasted memory.

I have an Asus PC-DL that sees 3.5GB RAM without a problem.

It's usually around that. It's not a hard and fast 3.00GB limit.

Because it wouldn't install for him when he had only 2GB installed, sounds like problems with the RAM itself.

is there a way without going to bios to see what the ram's voltage is at? I'm not sure when I'll see this comp next, but I will let you guys know if changing voltage does anything

Some boards come with monitoring software, if that is installed, then yes, but generally no.

I doubt you can adjust the ram voltage in the bios of this Intel branded board, but you can see if it is there.

so if i can't change the ram voltage, what is there for me to do to get this working? I'll be seeing the computer today

Lower the speed the RAM runs at.

So I saw the computer today, I could not change the ram voltage but i could change the ram reference frequency, i'm not really sure what that would do. I did memtest with 1 stick in each. only 1 stick passed the test which was weird. The others failed on 2, 3 and i believe 5. Would the voltage still cause this failing? Then why would 1 stick pass and the others not?
