4-door, high mileage vehicle under $30k

Looking to buy new
Sedan preferred but open to small suvs or crossovers
A minimum of 30k miles per year will be put on the vehicle, 85% or higher at highway speeds of 70mph

Must have the following:
200 miles or less on the odometer
Leather, power, & heated driver and front passenger seats
Combined mpg 24 or higher
Automatic Transmission

Other than that no other "must have"

Current top prospects are the Nissan Altima, Mazda 6, and VW Jetta TDI

I'd still avoid VW because of its reliability. The ALtima or Mazda you can't go wrong with. Of course, I cannot advise buying new, I think it's damn near insane. You could get a one year old v6 altima for not much more than a new 4 cylinder, or example. Gas mileage on the current gen of altimas is exceptional. Power, even in the 4 cylinder, is very solid, too with nice low 0-60 that you'd not expect for its power to weight ratio (CVT does a good job).

Mazda resale is probably worse than it should be so if you squeeze into a year old 6, it will be tons cheaper.

Jetta will be best MPG, and cost the most to keep on the road, oil changes need a special tool and have to be done at the dealer, Altima if you don't drive like a mainiac should get about 33 highway with the 4 cyl, and has plenty of power, Mazda I just did not like, also the Malibu is worth a look (I was underwhelmed), Accord is always popular, and lots of people seem to like the Fusion (I can't bring myself to buy anything built in mexico).

I've been looking had to replace my 06 altima because I just don't like the idea I'm in a 4 door tan sedan, I WANT something different, but nothing feels as nice, or is worth the cash I'd have to lay out. I even drove a couple BMW 3 series, and they just aren't worth 2-3 times the price to me, the trans tunnel jams my knee so bad I'd be crippled after a month.

Used 06 07 4 banger Accord...
I like them better than the new ones AND u should be able to get one for only about $15,000 with low miles (less than 20,000)...

Ford Fusion or Ford Focus.

New 2010 Fusion comes out in about a month and a half...The stock 4 banger gets 23city/34 highway.

This. Focus is also outstanding, but sounds like your budget is a bit higher. With the economy as crappy as it is, might be wise to get as low a payment as possible but still have a comfortable/reliable car.

I have been very happy with my Mazda 6s 5 Door over the past 18 months. I have gotten over 32MPG on the highway with the v6 (cruise control @ 74, light traffic). City driving averages in the mid 20's. I also drove the Fusion, Focus, and Edge since I was coming from a Contour, but the interiors were bad...and they just didn't have the spunk I was looking for.

If you buy anything other than an I4 Accord you're a dumbshit. I picked my 2008 i4, for 21K last year(leather with heated seats would add about 2K to that) and I get a mammoth sedan that gets decent pickup and over 35mpg on the highway for me. Infinitely better resale and reliability than the other makes listed here.

Wow, lots of suggestions I hadn't thought of. Thanks

Forgot to list that it must also be an automatic but I think all the suggestions thus far have it as an option.
This car is not for me and it will never be resold so resale value is of no consequence

a strap wrench is a 'special tool' these days?

My Crown Victoria does 27 mpg at 75 mph and will do 30 mpg at 60 mph. I do about 70-30 highway/city driving and get about 24 mpg combined. The Ford 4.6L V8 is just about the most reliable engine you could ask for. I have owned two Crown Victorias and both have been supremely reliable vehicles.

The car is extremely safe, very comfortable and you can pickup a very nice late model example for about what you would pay for a new Honda Civic. Also, insurance is dirt cheap.

Seconded. Even though you won't be able to find one new, the Crown Vics are pretty rock solid for solid driving.
